Satellite TV in the UP

I know this is off topic but I figured there is enough locals on this board that can help me out with this and the Misc forums seem to have the most traffic so I figured I would post here. I'm going to get satellite at my cabin up near Twin Lakes and wanted to know what company has the best service in the area? Thanks in advance!

Satellite does not matter where you are. If you can get a clear path you will not have a problem. Whatever service you have at home just order another box and dish why pay for another house. You can always find another dish on ebay. If you have direct tv I will give you one for shipping its a hd 3lnb satillite.

Yeah, don't pay for two services. Get the same as what you have at your main residence, and if you have cable, switch to the satellite provider of your choice, and only pay for one!

My bro has a TON of brand new Dish Network equipment from when he did installs. He just threw it all away. Splitters, amps, mounts, dishes, wall plates -you name it. Hasnt used it in 2-3 years. :(

well 1st off i have heard others talk of this but i personally have not tried it

http://www.squidoo.com/satellite-tv-for-pc--

i have used this since 2002 or so....it requires a cable connection but the new versions are wireless i think....i dunno because each time i buy a new puter i ALWAYS upgrade and get a TV TUNER and an NVIDIA GRAPHICS CARD....your computer might not have the capabilities.....90% dont....most buy a 500 dolla or under computer and that aint happenein....waste of 500 dolla....if you run CCLEANER open it and tell me the specs it says of you puter...then look in back of tower for cable doink connector....laptop has a LINE-IN but you woulda haveta bought a TV TUNER which none of you probably did....see how cheap bites you in tha azzzz later on? you can probably get this at you cabin through you phone with a service like VERSION AIR CARD...its only 19.99 a month and you use the phones modem and a 3G network which most of you have anyways

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-media-center/default.aspx

this is the version i use.....XP 2005....FYI XP OS outperforms VISTA and WIN7 hands down.....i run XP and its still updated and supported, they just told you all that so 90% of you would go out and buy new giving them much needed cash at your expense.....apple is even worse so dont even start me up

Come on up and see how your verizon works out my front door. Then see who says DUH.

Don't think the results will be any different where TTE's cabin is either. Not sure if any cell service is available there.

On second thought. I don't think I want someone like you within 100 miles of my place.

You just go ahead and keep knowing all.

By the way tilltheend. I got so caught up in taking part in the hijack, I forgot to chime in with my experiences with satellite TV up here.

I have DirectTV and it works well. As harvest1121 said. Either Dish or Direct will work the same- as far as pulling in the signal. As far as service calls and setup goes. I have only dealt with Direct. They do not have a local installer/service tech. The latest came from Chicago. Previous ones have come from downstate. It has never taken more than a week for them to get here, but when I call, sometimes I am told it could be two weeks (has always been shorter). We have never had a problem with the TV setup, only the Internet (I use Hughesnet, which owns DirectTV).

If you go the DirectTV route and are just going to go with the analog setup and need a dish, let me know. I have one just sitting collecting dust.

I had trouble following some of that. lol.

If you have dish service, you can use it at more than one location (assuming you buy a 2nd dish? Legally? My in-laws have a place in Eagle River, and I'm sure they would be interested if that works.

iusmit, just ask the installer for a 2nd dish when they show up. OR, just tell them you want a 2nd dish for your 2nd residence. They will give it to you. It's not that difficult to set up......

DirecTV just upgraded my equipment to HD, and that's what I did, no questions asked, 2nd dish in my hands ready to go up. Yes, you will need that 2nd reciever, but no biggie there. Not sure on Dish, but DirecTV charges $5 per extra box. Cheap considering everything......

no hijack TILLTHEEND....heres how you get REMOTE TV without a huge unreliable satelite hookup at your cabin....this is no joke i'm afraid....but others seem to think so and its not possible so they never look into it....just ask the provider YOU USE or HAVE in that area....you HAVE TO ASK because its way cheaper than the other way so THEY WILL NOT HELP YOU WITH THIS SETUP UNLESS YOU ASK THEM...i've even threatened to leave them for a competitor....low and behold a PCI EXPRESS card showed up at the house for my laptop.....my laptop is expensive so it has all the slots and bells and whistles and a TV TUNER...and if you buy a good one it comes with SONIC MYDVD which like in the link i provided about MEDIA CENTER in thread above explains how you can record and BURN ANY SHOW ON DVD or transfer to ipod or whatever....even use it the car or truck to get internets on the fly when on the highway just like SIRUS only free.....so i dunno

of its really remote location then you just ask for VERIZON mobile broadband fringe area solutions.......or don't

carry on

Well then Mr. Right:

Where do you have this set up?

Who is your provider?

Do you need a TV Tuner for this?

Is it Satellite phone service based?

Have you tried this in the middle of the Chequamegan Forest where there is no cell service?

um TTE and ADMIN...you can check your speed in your area here...EVDO revision A is what the speed is which is usually 1.8Mb per second

http://www.mobile-broadband-reviews.com/verizon-mobile-broadband-speed-09.html

and you can see service here

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/...requesttype=NEWREQUEST&coveragetype=broadband

if you notice the hump in U.P. which BIGBAY lies in says NO COVERAGE....not true....we all have coverage and some of the guys even get coverage 30 miles in the woods up on the YELLOW DOG PLAINS which is way out there...also it shows a blue dot at and around your house JD...so i dunno
