Satellite TV in the UP

TTE-

I was rummaging around for an old cell phone for Nora this morning (Grace knocked her current one off the counter and now her screen does not work) and I found that I also have an old receiver for Direct. So again, if you want to go with just their analog system, I have the dish and receiver you can have for free. All you need is to sign up for the service.

Professor-

I was told (as well as several friends recently) that you need more than just a land line for DSL, you need to be within something like 2 miles of a digital switch. 'Twas why I cannot get DSL here at my place and others living up here cannot either. Have things changed recently? I am happy with the satellite service and would not drop it for DSL, but have friends that have not gotten any broadband and would sign up with DSL if they could now. Thanks.

" if you have a landline there then you phone company can provide DSL BROADBAND through it.,....so......DOH "

Not true. There is a distance limitation to the Central Office for DSL service, though I dont remember what the number is, 2 miles sounds close. Copper wires dont always follow the most direct route so the distance can add up quick and put you outta reach. Even in a metro area surrounded by DSL. Too much $$ for payback to provide.

I'd bet there are still homes using rotary phones across the UP with rotary service.

distance still a glitch for true dsl land lines but there is alot of new technology out there. phone companies do not want to spend money in low populated areas with spread out lines! cell still mediocre in many places and terrain has alot to do with it ,along with number of towers.sattelite phones more expensive and weather can effect them.land line still has the most security!! Older ADSL standards can deliver 8 Mbit/s to the customer over about 2 km (1·25 miles) of unshielded twisted-pair copper wire. As of 2009[update], the latest standard, ADSL2+, can deliver up to 24 Mbit/s, depending on the distance from the DSLAM. Distances greater than 2 km (1.25 miles) significantly reduce the bandwidth usable on the wires, thus reducing the data rate. ADSL loop extenders increase these distances substantially

Yes you have to be within a certain distance to get a workable DSL signal.

Also for those of you with cabins without decent cell service (or none at all) you could always get a cellular signal boosting system (increases range for fringe areas)

yep....and then an aircard for INTERNET TV....guess they just dont want to ask their phone company...oh well.....let em pay the 100 a month for SHty sat service then i guess....we own a resort with aboot 15 cabins on it and are using something just like this to give it to all the cabins for no extra charge because MEDIA CENTER on the setup asks....SET TOP BOX or NO? i just said NO and let all the TV TUNERS in da puters do their thing....its hard to convince someone theres always a better way....also when u say NO to set top box you dont need the xtra charge for each one to have a box from SAT or CABLE or whatever....most people just say MOOOOOOOO and order a box for 5 dolla a month too.....another.....DOH

the distance is 25 miles these days...there is also a HOME CELL TOWER these days....like i said.....they actually HAVE TO ASK the company and quit pounding sand here

yo ILLINOIS...check this out from the links u provided from WILSON ELECTRONICS...its in the link on this post....heres how

If you'd rather not pay a monthly fee for expanded cell coverage, a cellular signal booster such as those from Wi-Ex and Wilson Electronics might be a better alternative. For $400 you can buy a dual-band amplifier and antenna system that works with both CDMA providers (such as Sprint and Verizon) and GSM carriers (AT&T and T-Mobile). Cell boosters require an antenna in a spot (often outdoors) that has good reception--the amplifier can boost indoor signal strength only to the level the outdoor antenna receives. But they work with any normal handset, and can even boost 3G data access.

PC do you know anything about the UP??? You have all this GREAT advice for people telling them a hundred ways to make this work and I don't think you have a clue.

3G needs a tower that can handle the speed, I have a 3G phone and live in northern WI, I can and will tell you this. I do not get any 3G speeds until I get close to Green Bay, Appleton area or close to the twin citys. From here north to the cabin is hit or miss, can get a GREAT signal in Houghton but not 3G.

Now when it comes to cabins, I know that I am 2.5 miles off of a paved road..... so no land line and even if I did I can tell you that with a verizon switch in Eagle River, WI more then 2 miles out of town and no DSL!!!! so I don't think you are going to find it anywhere outside of Houghton. No power! live off of solar and bat's with a gen back up. As for any cell service I can get 1-1.5 bars depening on where I stand, and if I stand for more then a min in one spot it drops and I have to move a step or two. So all the great high tech ways you are saying to make this work will not and good old sat is still the way to go.

thats all great dude....only 3G does not mean speed.....it means 3rd GENERATION PHONE OS and has NOTHING....and i say NOTHING to do with the speed....go google it if you dont believe me....and when you get 1 to 1.5 bars...if u used that antennea that illinois said to...do you think the bars will be more...less....or the same....the problem is YOU or any of these dudes dont look into it...you just perpetuate the myths....how do you think the HUNGRY HOLLOW in BIGBAY which has shty cell reception and only 1 bar....how does that restaurant have BROADBAND INTERNET ACCESS CAFE for customers and you cannot get it at the hotel....answer me that.....or is internet access just for businesses? and how the he!! do you think you credit card gets swipped for money transactions from my bank in indiana from the UP to say ok...he gots money...fill er up....

hopefully you were kidding and....

did you actually ASK your phone provider if you can get it?

or did you just spout off blindly

think aboot it....restaurant and gas station can but RADISHR cannot....another DOH my friend

Then why oh why oh why pls tell me? I do not get 3G on my phone to come on unless I get near a bigger city??? and as soon as I head north the light goes off????? And when I am down state is my internet on the phone fast as my DSL and when I head north regardless of number of bars I have time to finish a beer before I can finish looking something up on-line?

Tell me it has nothing to do with the towers?

As for the gas stations and places to eat I would say that they use a land line be it dial up and I can tell you I did hear the wonderful tones of dial up on CC machines or DSL land line to transmit data for cards. I really don't think they have a cell phone next too the machine and use it to trans my data. And I also know that the gas stations up here all have a sat dish on top of them that is used to transmit data.

theres no way you had time to actually look yet....so with that in mind here...

XP = 1st phone generation

VISTA = 2nd

WIN7 = 3rd

is WIN 7 faster than XP.....not neccesarily....its the hookup not win7....because my XP can out do your WIN7 and get HD TV....where did the speed come from eh?

now go look it up and forget the big shty

click on HUNGRY HOLLOW...and they are way away from any city and have it

Today 12:35 PM

you need to reread this

This weekend Tmobile... Rice Lake, Ladysmith full bars with 3G, go 15 miles out of town and nothing. Verison was much better everyplace we went.

because VERISONS towers are better and have more power and more places than T-MOBILES....so the answer is YES to that ? and guess what? theres one more provider than gets even farther than those 2

so answer me this....did you TRY anything i said?

why dont you try this...this is what most REMOTE gas stations use and CABINS and RESORTS in that area

http://up.net/

http://baragatelephone.com/broadband/

sure looks like its available to me fer christs sake

http://up.net/staticpages/index.php?page=20020724094608343

you want i should hold yer hand?

look in here at all the web addys of cabins...what does it say? UP.net by any chance? and to top it off there is a cheaper way than this even...go back reread some of my posts
