without taking the suspension out how can you tell if you need to rebuild shocks or not? 03 polaris classic 500, 8000 miles.didn't seem to ride bad when put away.i think they are original fox shocks all the way around sled.

With 8000 I would get them done. Do you bottom out alot? You can pick up the rear and see how much it sags when you let go. I have always moved it up and down with one hand and if I moves too easy then it's time. I would remove and give your suspension a good look over as well.

Usually shocks with that kind of milage will transfer some of the nitrogen over into the oil and not work as well. Rebuilt lots of shocks in my time. I would take them out and see how they feel, and then maybe even put them in the freezer over night then see how they feel. Just my thoughts. Let it snow!

Definatly get it done. If you push down on it and it doesn't come up really fast, then it needs to be rebuilt.

Indy, you want them to compress slow, and you want them to rebound slow. If it rebounds fast, that usually means the shock is toast. You do not want it to come back to fast. To fast means less control.

i noticed when my shock was shot when i pushed down on it, and it took about 2 minutes for it to come up ;)

Well its pretty obvious something was wrong with it, but it aint from not having a charge anymore. Gas charge shocks come back to full extend, oil charge shocks dont. There is different valve stacks to change the rate of compression and rebound, but if it took 2 mins, either somebody didnt know what their doing when they built it, or its broke.

rebuilt it, got a season on it, and it's perfectly fine.

thanks, removed them, my buddy does shocks for 70 a piece parts and labor. the skid looks pretty good for the beating that they take. one shock seems fine but he said if when letting the nitrogen out if theres oil in the nitrogen it needs seals if not it does not.then the price goes down.

You live in Jefferson County right? I can point you in a few much cheaper directions for shocks. A polaris dealer being one of them.

70 is way too much. I only paid 55 from a dealer, which is still a ton. You can get it done for 25 if the seals are ok, if they seals are shot, prolly around 40 at the cheapest.

thanks, it sounded high but i was on the internet and saw a couple places that were 50 with oil and parts were extra.robs performance said 50 bucks but i'm not sure if that was total or not. are you talking hartwigs in creek?they didn't answer thier phone yesterday.

Hartwigs is one, I think they changed their hours and now close at 7 pm, I believe. One of the guys that works at Robs does shocks at his house. There is a guy in jefferson that has done 4 shocks for me in the past. A guy in Waterloo. They are all over down here, and Ive never paid more than $45, but that was with seals and changing valve stacks. Usually its $35. I have 2 shocks at Hartwigs now, I forgot what he told me, but I am having the valving changed on both of them too.
