Haven't made it to Gooch's yet but every time I go past there they have been busy to swamped. Place looks awesome.

They did a great job on the rebuild, just glad they did. Could have been really easy to just take the insurance and walk away but they really like there business and wanted to rebuild and stay around.

Great place, I think they are closed one day during the week, it was either Tuesday or Wednesday so we rode back down to Headwaters in BJ.

Boulder beer bar never burned they just closed, Gooch’s burned and rebuilt and doing well. I will say that western Vilas county has been a little less friendly to the power sports people than the towns to the east. They are opening up some but many are still fighting it. Snowmobiles have been around so long they gave in years ago because it brought money to the area in the winter, summer they have all the lakes and resorts so don’t need the atv/utv crowd for income. But towns like PI have started to get some other people to start making decisions and are opening up to everyone not just the ones that complain the most.
Goofy has it exactly correct. Snowmobiling in NW Vilas has never been an issue has been embraced for as long as I can remember. I’m sure there are residents that hate snowmobiles but that ship has sailed. It’s lake use and shoreline development that has paired the DNR and greenies to a cult like environment. Boats make wakes wakes break on the shoreline and greenies and DNR get passionate about how many boats a lake can support and activities that the DNR want to restrict. That becomes a very slippery slope and lots of greenies active in that area especially in PI and Boulder. Their most recent target is wake boats and DNR considering banning them along waterski activities. I’m an avid waterskier so those discussions irritate me to no end. Imo let everyone have fun doing what they want and follow the laws already on the books and the rest of the state of WI. ATVs will find away into the area and use on city roads is slowly being embraced by most towns. Hopefully as Goofy indicated younger people will take control and be more open to Motorsports land and water development. 👌

If you lived on the lake and wake board boats consistently came within 200 ft of your pier and shoreline I guarantee you would have a different opinion of them. I agree that it's everyone's lake and they have a right to enjoy it but so does everyone else.

I don’t have a different opinion of wake boats and I had 100 feet of floe dock on a sand bar on Spectacle Lake and wakes came rolling in with any boat. Boat type restrictions lead to many other water use restrictions like engine size , boat size and the next irritation which would PWCs. I’m a let be type of guy have fun doing whatever you like be respectful of other people obey laws and have fun. I live on the Fox River in Waterford and every type of boat is here even race boats and everyone is happy and get along well. The fun police were voted out a lifetime ago here! Vilas is the last stand for the old guard greenies and the DNR stands with them. If the DNR gets their lake use density recommendations in Vilas approved there will be a major rebellion. DNR and lake districts often meet in Boulder and you should attend and you will be shocked at their agendas.

I agree with WD but draw the line with wake boats. I nearly got swamped by one in my 20' deck boat. Can't imagine being in a smaller fishing boat. Just plain dangerous.

I attend meetings in our township of MW, as of right now nothing has been decided and that has been status quo forever regarding wake boats. I'm not a huge fan of the DNR and their overeach period. The town has to be mindful that that tourists/locals bring $ to the area during the summer and they are but you also have to be mindful of the property owners/other people that want to enjoy the lake. I don't think it's fair that because of the wake created by these boats the property owners have to deal with the damage that they to do to certain types of shoreline. There is room for both, it's not meant to be one sided for either group, people should work together for a solution. Also, like you stated, people should respect other people and that is something that went out the window years ago.

Respect exists here in Waterford on the Fox River plus Tichigan and Buena Lakes. Lots of close running but no fist shaking or fingers from the shoreline that I experienced in Vilas. This area is extremely mellow just people having fun on the water. I was surprised how easy going and tolerate everyone is here after a lifetime of boating on inland and saltwater. There is only 2 launch access to a large body of water so maybe we attract few weekend warriors. Maybe it’s your neighbor out having fun or boaters just tolerant understanding it is what it is. Few police here and they don’t harass people don’t shake them down for boat inspection excuses. What I experienced in Vilas on lakes was radical ideology from greenie residents and the DNR standing by them. I think in time Goofy is correct the younger people will take over be more flexible on land and water use. Unfortunately for me I lived there while the old guard was in power and I felt I was talking to a rock to open land and water up to the people. Greenies and the DNR generally thought the land was for the deer, bear and wolves and water was for native plants, the fish , loons and frogs. Sure wildlife should be protected but man should also have total access to land and water too.

Happy for you, I think there is respect here from people who understand the definition of the word. Like I said there is room for everyone, just ask for a little common sense to be used.

I’m known for making the best of bad things that happen in life. Believe me I would rather be back in Vilas but my family needed me here in Waterford so here Iam. Ironically my best riding Bud moved back to IL for family issues too. So now we are snow chasers longing for the UP and Vilas county. 🤷‍♂️ Make the most of your active retirement in Manny Waters you will never regret it👍

I kind of gathered that you would like to back in the Northwoods but as you say, Family does come into play. We have settled into the community, My wife still has to work for benefits and she now has a great little job 32 hours a week Monday through Thursday with 3 day weekends so we can go visit people when needed. 10 minute drive to work for her with great benefits and free health club membership as well as other discounts to the businesses in town. As you know you just have to keep active and not fall into the trap of sitting around. Next year will be busy with building the garage and seeing what comes next, hopefully a grandchild in the future. Hopefully you will get some snow down there and can put a few miles on in Southern WI. I loved riding down there when the trails were flat and fast during good snow years, just doesn't happen that often though. Enjoy your Holidays!

My bad - I thought it was BBB that burned down. Sorry to hear they just closed. I remember when you couldn't even get into the place because of the crowds. Glad to hear Gooch's is doing well, though. I'll be up there in Manny Waters the day after Christmas for four days. Staying at one of our favorite log home rentals with the kids and hopefully riding. I really can't wait.

It's a great place up here. It's possible for a ride this winter, let me know when and I'll see if I can make it. Thanks for the invite and I agree, Happy Wife, Happy Life, wherever that might be. I'm not on any other social media sites other than linkedin and there are some great people on this site. Met a guy on JD last year named Jerry who rents a place for a couple months in MW and we rode several times last year and will again this year.

most lakes in the north woods would benefit from slow no wake bouys around the perimeter of the lake like most lakes in southern wis
no a bad idea but
boats are already required to operate at slow no wake within 100 ft of shoreline
and its not just the shoreline is all other watercraft also
people just need to follow the laws already in place

The same thing is going on on the Cisco chain certain land owners making a lot of noise then getting government involved just to get what they want. Once they got started they are trying to add more restrictions to the chain. Only thing that is truly needed is enforce existing laws and all would be good but that will never happen because of the lack of law enforcement.

yes lack of law enforcement is defiantly an issue on the minocqua chain too
it is a free for all out there at times
