Does anyone think they will take advantage of this during the winter months? Depending on ticket pricing I think it is great to have flights going to Chicago versus Minneapolis.....But then again I live in Chicago

beware....hancock airport closes frequently in the winter. our flight was cancelled due to 4" of snow the night before. apparently it all came down at once forcing the incoming plane to redirect to marquette....left no plane to depart with in the morning.

i am told this is pretty common

Actually, for as bad as the weather can be on a consistent basis up here, flights are seldom cancelled or redirected to another airport. I have been flying out of the Houghton County Airport at least once a year (sometimes 2-3 times a year) for the past 10 and never encountered a problem. Even taken off and landed in conditions that were a challenge just to get to the airport by car!

With that said, the weather can cause problems as Matt stated and experienced, so you might not want to try and shoe horn in a trip thinking you will have no problems. It's the airline industry!

Its seems the CRJ200 Planes are better an not having "Icing" issues as opposed to the Saabs. Maybe a plane expert will chime in on that. I do like the fact that Skywest will be using Jets versus Prop planes.

It would be cool to fly out on a last minute trip, but I guess the consensus is to watch the weather closely!

American has had direct flights to O'Hare for a couple of years I believe...This will just the new carrier. My buddy from Chicago had taken the previous carrier's flight a few times.. Now I'm not a 100% sure but I believe it was direct to/from htn but maybe a pit stop in MQT. I have had some rather unfortunate delays due to weather.. All of my delays "6" I think have been related to fog..Never any issues with snow..I once was two days late for a 5 day seminar in Charlotte, NC..

All flights out of Houghton have been to MSP. A few years back they had flights to Detroit, but not Chicago. For that you had to go to MQT.

Keep in mind the change over from Mesaba to Skywest will not happen until March.

Hmmm interesting. What are parking fees @ Houghton County Airport? I need to fly to Tucson AZ for business RT non stop American O'Hare & back is only carrier unless I go Northwest thru Rhinelander,WI to Minneapolis. Also convoluted inexpensive route thru Rockford,IL to Phoenix on Alligent then drive to Tucson. Rockford does not charge for parking & I'm always gone a week or more so parking can get expensive at other airports. Houghton could be good route for me if numbers make sense. Any Houghton Airport parking info is appreciated.

Parking at the Houghton CO. airport is around $3 a day. Maybe a bit more or maybe a bit less, but certainly not more than $5 a day.

Now that I think about it I met bud a few times to golf at Grey Walls in MQT..He did fly here too but that must have been spendy cause he would have had to switch carriers after jettin in to MQT..

for chicago prob makes sense from msp never thought it was worth it 2+hr at the airport for check in 1.5 hr in the air if no delays 45min to the airport 4+hr + 100 more than gas without parking.

I'm personally glad Mesaba is leaving. I've had countless issues with them and the Houghton County Airport. A high number of cancelled flights for various reasons, not weather related. As long as I'm started I'll also say that if you shop around you will find that MQT is usually considerably cheaper while offering the choice of different carriers and multiple flight options. The other headache is that with CMX you are going to be coming or going to MSP airport. I've spent a lot of time parked on the runway there due to the ongoing construction at the MSP airport. I'm not anti Delta, just that route from CMX to MSP or reversed. I have been using the Ironwood airport more recently and that has been working out better. Parking there if I remember right was only $2.00 per day. The MQT airport is usually decent with flight arrivals and departures however they only have a North/South runway available. I recently had a scheduled 41 minute flight from ORD to MQT and we left Ohare at 11 a.m. only to arrive in Marquette at 9 p.m. due to the poor weather. The weather is always a key factor, but close to the lake it can be a real hassle. You can fly direct from Ohare to Marquette on American Airlines.

I thought I was making a good decision driving to MQT rather than flying out of CMX last year going to Hawaii. Two hour drive to MQT and $80 for parking. I would gladly pay the extra $170 and only have 5 minutes of driving to get home after 20 hours of traveling. I've flown about a dozen times out of CMX and only once was I delayed. What scares me is I've flown out of O'Hare only once and was delayed! Time will tell.

Just out of curiosity, How large of a plane do they fly in and out of the houghton county airport? Im sure they are small, but do you have to provide your own goggles and scarf or do they provide that for you?

Not a fan of flying, and the smaller the plane the worse it is for me.
