Had several accidents yesterday on hwy 51, between Tomahawk, and Wausau, and its black ice in the same section again today (more vehicles, in the ditch) ..
Several trucks pulling snowmobile trailers were involved yesterday...not trying to point fingers...but I had several of these big trucks and trailers blow by me, on terrible road condition...not only do u create white conditions for the other motorists, you also put yourself in danger. Hwy 51 is not very good right now...its extremely rough in the tomahawk area....so please SLOW DOWN, and have some respect for the other drivers. The snow isnt going to melt before you get here, and we want you to come back again...so make it home safely.
Btw...the backroads are awful right now, big snow banks too...so motorists have restricted views, keep that in mind when crossing roads on your sled.
Rant over...be safe!!

I was heading north on 51 after a snow and after every overpass was a freaking skating rink of glare black ice. The snowplows throw the stuff over the edge and it lands on the north side (shaded) of those overpasses. Nasty. After breaking the tires loose a couple of times I would just completely let off the go pedal going under those bridges. Scary.

Yep...and like I said...hwy 51 is in rough shape...one good bump with icy conditions, and you are off in the ditch.

HWY 45 on Friday morning was glare ice as well - it looked like black top, but was black ice. I drove 40-45 from Butte De Mortes to Eagle River.
Coming back today it wasn't much better until about 50 miles south of Eagle River. They use NO salt up there, but at those -25 to +10 temps, won't do much good.

Thanks for the updates. We rolled our trailer coming home in December, M out of BJ was all ice. Heading back up tomorrow, will take it easy and this storm looks like it means business!

No way! Snowmobiling is all about going from one place to another as fast as possible!

Amiright?

Oh, don't forget to stop and have a few beers every ten miles (minutes).

Yes it was. I drove up hwy 45 from where i jump on in New London all the way up to where it switches over to M26 on my way to Twin lakes, mi on Friday morning. Left at 4 Am but still made it there in 4.25 hrs but i had it easy with just my sled in the truck.

I came through there the other day on my way back from LDF, and there is no reason that stretch of 51 southbound isn't posted at a speed limit of about 45mph....lol...it is absolutely brutal.

I get your sarcasm, I guess a guy just learns to slow down, smell the roses, take in the sights and relax at some point.

I will add, Hwy 51 near Central WI airport area is one of the worst stretches on this hwy. Not sure why it is, but I use to run that direction a few times per month for work and I always dreaded this stretch. Seems you get just enough drifting to cause a black ice effect with the semis and trucks compressing the snow. While I have never "ditched" I have slipped more times than I can count, and have seen many accidents. If roads are bad at all, I am down on my speed quite a bit in this area in particular.

If you're talking the part from 8 to S......that's what I've been doing. I slow down to 45 and put my hazards on. The heck with that... I'm not beating up my equipment. That's definitely a mess!

I don't know? It's really to each his own. I just became to worried about self-preservation to stay on the trails.

On the other hand I came out to my cabin today, Sandy Lake, and went for a wonderful cross country ride on my Tundra. Massive snow coming down. It was wonerful.
