The morning news also said Atlanta has a temp of around zero and ice. Accedents all over down there.

cold in Orlando

Had hoped to have snow in the air pics against my grapefruit tree this morning for everyone from Orlando , but not to be. Drizzily rain right now so any snow is melting through a warm layer of air. Warm being upper 30* as I write this. Consistant 30's and upper 20's over night for the past week here. Did not pass 46* yesterday.
Now all us Yankees find cold weather reactions in the south somewhat comical but it's a very serious matter to people who have no idea how to cope in this type of weather. Many older homes may not even have any type of heating built in. Older homes here are block with no insulation and single pane windows. I don't think there is a space heater for sale left in Cental Florida. Coat and blanket drives are taking place for the needy with the news telling people how to drive in possibly iced over bridges and roadways. It was reported on the news that Orlando International Airport does not even have deicing equipment which would lead to flight delays. It was stated deicing equipment is owned by the airlines, not the airport. (Never knew that.) As for myself I've found a few air leaks that you just don't find when its 95*+ and 98% humidity. My heat pump is working so hard I think the bearings are going to fall out of the fan. lol.

Like many, counting the days till I'm on my sled in Michigan.

Many older homes do not or if they do it is an oil fired furnace in the center of the home with one vent, no duct work. Floor mounted if the house has a crawl space. Our house built in 1951 had this arrangement at one time. An old timer in the neigborhood has told me our home was a model home. I just looked at him and said "you're kidding , right". When I married my wife she this is all she had for heat and one wall unit a/c for the entire house. We quickly upgraded to whole house a/c and heat and double pane windows. We joke that we're now in the 20th century.
The mind set in Florida since the 1800's has been selling warmth to the north. A normal winter day here is like a nice summer day in the upper midwest, 70's for highs in January. People just are'nt prepared for cold weather here like when the high was 36* yesterday with a low of 28* for hours last night. Expect to pay more for strawberries and citrus fruit.
On the somewhat funny side iquanas and lizards are falling from the trees in a stupor.
