Snowest - Paid Memberships

Who here that visits Snowest is going to pay for the premium membership? I visit Snowest infrequently but was looking through the thread on the carbon fiber build of the 1200 Doo Turbo, once I clicked on page 2 I was told my free viewing privileges had ended.

I would consider paying for the membership if I knew all of the "regulars" who provide the great pictures and stories were going to stay but from what I have seen not many of them have upgraded to the "paid member" status.

I believe many of the Snowest regulars are migrating to www.backcountryrebels.com I don't plan on upgrading until I need to if that time ever comes. I usually only go to SW if I have a specific tech question or if I am planning a west trip and want to check conditions. I have really not verified what comes with the free membership and what doesn't yet.

I am still thinking about doing it. I've gotten so many tech tips from guys over there it is unreal. Especially with the Poo 900, wow, I have saved my buddy a HUGE amount of money.

I go to BCR also, they have no where near the amount of people on there. Will it get better, more popular? Probably. Time will tell I guess.

So as of right now I am in limbo, not sure if I will pay or not.

Maybe your "buddy" should pay the fee.

I'm a moderator over there for the M-Series section, I could have got it for free but I paid the premium membership to lead by example. I have gotten a lot of information on that site that has saved me a lot of time and money. For $10.00 a year the next 3 years I am willing to give it a shot.

Anytime something goes from Free to Paid it causes a little uproar, all I can say is that I am going to give it a try because I think the other options are duds, especially for the M-Series. I have not gotten any good M-Series info from either arcticchat.com or Hardcoresledder. Now for trail sleds and crossfires those sites are much much better and have helped me out with my old ZR and ZL quite a bit.....Not good for M's though.

The member base is much smaller, but most of the knowledgable people are allready there.
I for one, will not be paying for content that myself and my fellow sledheads provide! They have over thirty thousand members and countless hits per day. If you can't make money from payed advertisers with those kind of numbers , then you need to re-think your buisness plan, and by re-think, I don't mean charge the people who are providing the content for you!! Just my .02

This is what baffles me. They are asking you to pay for your and others intellectual property that has already been posted for free. Everything else they are offering are just forum fluffs, except for the digital copy of their rag. Now if you believe the digital copy of their rag is worth the cost then by all means sign up. But pay to view forum posts?? Not for me.

Yes there is a lot of info there that people have spent countless hours posting. However, if you need to know something just post it on one of the several dozen free sites available and someone will respond with the answer you are looking for.

I remember when another very popular forum tried this and now they hear crickets.

I hope they fail miserably!

I'm done there. Much more about the principle than the money. I have found good info there but anything very good can be found here, hardcoresledders, arcticchat, backcountryrebels soon enough anyways. I bet in less than a year it is a mere shell of what it once was.

Never been to snow-west but there is another example to look at...

When Hardcoresledder was bought buy Canadian Corporation Vertical Scope there was a small uproar and "Freedom Sledder" was the spinoff created by the original owner of Hardcore Sledder, Rob. It is still a sizable site some time later, so it is entirely possible that a spinoff can survive. Verticalscope has kept Hardcore sledder free, I cant imagine what will happen in this case ($$$ membership)

IDK about the quality of info at freedomsledder though lol

What will all the members who contribute a lot of info feel about paying to give other people advice?

Thank god John isn't greedy and charge us all for using his web site. He could make a forture charging a membership fee but doesn't. I know it has been covered and said before but thanks again John for the awesome web site.

I myself still like to get the magazines in the mail, there are times when you need a good story to help get things moving. Flush-Flush

And that is the part (aside from not knowing what the future of the site holds) that makes me so hesitant to pay a membership fee. Not to bash Christopher but he came in and started making changes with out knowing what their systems could handle, the upgrades required new, expensive servers that the advertising revenue can't support. I agree there is great info, stories, pictures and safety info on SW, but it is not content generated by SW. Which then leads to the question are the pictures, stories, tech tips etc posted on SW the property of SW? Need to review their user agreement.

Thanks to John for providing both a site to share information and providing his IP for free.

Thats not necessarily true. This site is no different than snowest. Its just smaller.

Everyone comes for the reading and or contact with friends, and once the entries stop or slow down and you can no longer contact friends who would pay for that?

The only way it stays the same is for everybody to buy in.

If 1/3 of the membership core leave it will eventually cause another 1/3 to leave within a year.

Advertisers buy in based on exposure to a certain amount of members. Therefore if membership declines the advertisers may go elsewhere. It is up to Snowest to determine if membership dollars + reduced advertisers dollars = profit vs expense vs the way it was vs the way it is now.

Thank you John Dee.
