Snowmobiling Next 10 To 20 Years

I understand the safety concerns, and definitely agree with you that the speeds are getting to be a concern, but I don't get the argument that sledding will die because there is too much traffic. That's like what Yogi Berra said about a restaurant - no one goes there anymore, it's too crowded.

If the speeds could be controlled, the day to day fuel/oil/maintenance costs would come down as well. No one put 250/300 miles a day on 20 years ago (ok some did, but not many) since the trails weren't set up to ride that fast all day long.

Yup seems the high traffic areas get more crowded each year it must be the thing to do so lets go there!

The to much traffic isn't killing sledding, but it is a turnoff for families on the trail. That's also the reason why so many have gone the off trail route.

The to crowded thing is hard to explain , but I got out of boating in the Chicago land area because of it. The weekends are nuts and its no longer fun. The weekends are for getting away from the rat race, not chasing it!

I get that. I'm not a big fan of riding on the weekends in the UP if I can avoid it...

Snowmobiling has gotten more complicated - cost and planning. Everything. And narrowed down - Trailer here, reservations or a cabin, buy stickers
and ride down" trails " with many others.
20 - 30 yrs back you just rode and got to know 2 tracks or no tracks and learned. For those today who enjoy riding, Its going to get more regulated by laws. but more so by being stuck riding like sheep and having an unknown around every turn and trail sign, and just to much for full time dedication and cost with so many other things.

There you go,another cost, more vacation days, because weekends are packed. If I wanted to stand in line and wait for a table,I can just stay home.

the reason sleds have doubled or tripled in price is the advances..think about the flat bottomed board sleds of the past..omg..I could not even ride one today..not even 10 years ago..i absolutely pay and will pay for the advances in ride handling and comfort..and the only detriment to the future of this sport is the idiots.

Easy people are creatures of habit they head for their fav Trail 3 resort & ride Trail 3 back & forth all day. To me boring as boring can be soooooooo many other great trails in the UP that are sooooooooo much better than Trail 3 on a weekend or during the week. If you don't like the traffic then try another area they DO exist! If WUPMI only snow around then grin & make the best of it or wait. I waited last year to the point of panic but it was worth it Vilas County,WI had the best trail conditions in 10 years from late Feb until the end of March.

I can't see myself ever getting out of snowmobiling. But I see the tree huggers and land developers making it much more difficult for us. Also we will add very few young folks to the sport due to the high cost of sleds and gas. They will just have pretend sleds on Xbox to ride.

I don't ever see me getting out of snowmobiling either, but I'm wondering if I'll ever buy another new sled. You can snowmobile around Door County on anything, and I'm thinking when this batch of sleds is too worn out for Michigan I'll just rent.

Or borrow Mike & Linda's!

Let's not forget that there is no manufacturer applying downward price pressure in the market.

Well, yeah it gets crowded, what with Lenny's stuck groomer taking up half the trail!

My thoughts on the future of snowmobiling is as follows:

1.) New sleds are much to expensive and unaffordable to many.

2.) Oil and maintenance, wear bars, studs, gas, and belts extrememly expensive.

3.) Lack of snow, I would love to get a new sled but with the lack of snow and how expensive they cost to get a decent sled is not justifable fore me, especially living in southwest michigan.

4.) Land owners are getting greedy and wanting more money and now we are losing crucial sections of trails which will also provoke people to steer away from the sport.

5.) Clothing, helmets, the basics to stay warm while riding has sky rocketed.

6.) Trail Permits keep going up and up and up. I got to ride 3 times last year unfortunately, and I am sure im not the only one, hard to justify the money for the permits when you seldomly get to ride them, but I know it goes to the trail system, but for the people trying the sport for the first time see all these costs and I think it scares them away.

In conclusion, I love snowmobiling and plan to ride till i cant ride anymore or afford it anymore, but the costs have surely risen in every aspect. Will snowmobiling still be around 10-20 years from now? YES! But its going to be for the wealtheir person and no longer for the average joe!
