Some real loosers in this activity we call snowmobiling

Ok, this it probably an over reaction and I will probably regret this, but I guess I just need to vent.

It is obvious to anyone that the forecast did not pan out as thought. The storm hit about 150 miles further south than anticipated.

I've been forecasting for over 30 years now and have had more than my fair share of bombs. It stinks, no way around it, but I just try and learn all I can and move on. Today was a double whammy with not only having to deal with the bombed forecast, but also have the heavier snow miss me.

What really has gotten me though is the actions of a few that apparently visit the site. Last night I get an e mail from someone that is complaining that my forecast for 5-10" in NW IA totally bombed because they got 0". So I start to thinking that I did not remember saying that NW IA would get that much in my latest forecast. I look and sure enough, I have the NW 20-25 miles or so getting 2-4" and my text says places like far NW IA could get 2-5". I do a little further checking and overnight, the far NW corner of IA gets 2". So I e mail the guy back this morning (not sure why I even wasted my time) and his reply is that "a week ago I called for them to get 6-10"".

Move on to this evening, when I get this doozy:
John - I have been following your weekly forecasts for upper Michigan for few years . 8-12 inches for U.P. through December 15th. dont think so, this so called storm is now a 2-4 inch storm and the temps for the rest of the upcoming week are now mid to high 30's with rain ? what happen to the big change in the pattern you talked about all last week? cold temps and snow ? are now nothing but a lie , do you get payed to do this if so I recommend another career path.

First off, the 15th is still 6 days away! So the forecast has not even had a chance to bomb yet. Secondly, from all the forecasts I look at, there is none calling for temps in the mid to high 30's with rain. All call for temps to be below freezing, except Thursday when the high is 34 for most of the UP. Plus some snows are seen after this storm and before the 15th is over. So it is not even completely out of the realm of possibilities that between now and the 15th 8" will fall.

Anyway, I guess I just needed to vent. I know that there are also some very great folks in this activity and have had the pleasure to meet many. I just wish that there was a way to ship people like this to a different planet.

I feel better already. Time for bed.

-John

Glad we could be here for you John. For every hundred or so great people on this site, I'm sure there is one that gets under our skin. I think we all have needed to vent about someone they have interacted with from here.

Thanks to all the good people and to you John.:)

John, you should also be prepared for Nash to check your thread title. I'm sure you meant "losers", not "loosers".

John: Models are the models for a given day then they change & why I try to keep up with your forecast each day. System snow is all about the storm track & really can't nail it down until that day & sometimes that does not work out. LES take you best shot & hope bands are widespread very fickle stuff in timing & amount. Emailing you & complaining is about a weather forecast is goofy to me no idea why someone would do that? Keep up the good work & looking for the next storm on Monday's forecast & put this one behind us.:)

John keep the faith. There are stupid people all over the world not just the Midwest. I will trust your forecasts before all other, so please don't loose any sleep over it. I read a lot of posts don't comment to often but this one is worth a few words so please keep up the good work and let's hope for snow in the U.P. soon so everyone can get out and play.

Amazing the amount of douchebags there are in the world. Really doesn't surprise me anymore.

On another note, another example of technolgy over load. Remember good old days? Not knowing it was gonna snow till night before. Waking up making PHONE CALLS all over to see who got the most.

Keep up the good work John!

Don't sweat it John. We are surrounded by ignorance every day. Your always going to have ignorant people give you crap when your in the "lime light". Its kind of like the people who get mad about poor trail conditions. They say things like "All the money I give to this state, they should be out grooming". They just don't get it, and you'll never fix stupid, no matter how hard you try.

You went out of your way to provide us with an update, on your "day off". That really says something about your character, and there are SO many more of us that are grateful for your forecasts. Don't let a couple schmucks get to ya!

I'll be the first to admit that I take John's most enthusiastic forecasts and often most optimistic from a snow lover's perspective, with a few grains of salt...... But there is no reason to "blame" a weather man for a forecast that missed.

However, I think if John went back and read his forecast text from a few days back (I forget which day) I remember reading something about his skepticism about where the models where placing the snow? John?

I have to laugh at the guy who said you should find a different career path. I think people have to remember that John's main source of income is his Global Weather Monitoring business. Obviously if he sucked at it, he would not be in business anymore! And to have the balls to send John a personal e-mail whining and crying about the forecast, when John offers this site to all for FREE, is beyond comprehension to me! To the people who look at a forecast, a week out, and think it will not change, you are delusional!!

Eagle1, oh how I remember the days of making phone calls! LOL.

Well John I'm new to the site and I have really enjoyed surfing the posts and watching your forecasts. Sure I was hoping the UP would get more but as I write it's starting to look more encouraging!! Glad you could vent and we appreciate your Sunday update especially having to be the bad news messenger.. I would never load up the trailer and head up on just a forecast anyway!! Keep doing what ya do please.

John's job is not easy, but he is no different than any other weather man. He is wrong more than he is right, he and others perdict the weather. There is no guarantee . I love snow and this site as much as the next guy, I'm not bashing. John keep up the hard work, the site is world class. Criticism is unavoidable in any profession. Especially when you are a innovator like John Dee. Keep up the good work . Think Snow!

Unless you have a crystal ball, there is no way to predict the future correct all the time. I will say you hit the nail on the head for a trip I took to the Black Hills last year. We had been waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Then FINALLY right around 2/23 you had a huge dump predicted over there. We left first thing the next morning and timed it perfect. THANK YOU!!!

Screw those clowns!

I've been reading your forecasts for as long as I can remember. I always hope you are right but have never planned or cancelled a trip based on them.

I come up whenever possible and make the best of whatever the conditions are.

You've got better things to worry about than these azzhats!
