Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula

To some very very foolish and inconsiderate snowmobilers: Please stay on the trails and respect private property!! Overnight, several snowmobiles trespassed onto Mount Bohemia property in Lac La Belle and caused such damage that they may not even be able to open this Saturday. Not only was this action irresponsible, but it puts the Lac La Belle trail in jeopardy also. Because our trail system crosses Mount Bohemia property, they have the option to close their section at any time, resulting in the loss of the whole trail. PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL!

Yep. They don't have snowmaking, so had not opened yet. Were hoping to tomorrow, but now that could be in doubt.

I agree with you Firecatguy, will really put a black eye on our activity.

If they catch the folks that caused the damage they should take the sleds away form them and sell them giving the proceeds to the ski resort to help offset the damages and possible loss of income...
We do not need clowns like this in our sport!

So what do you think about snowmobilers riding around a cemetery and wrecking gravestones? The sport is going downhill quickly and we're losing trails left and right because of this kind of stuff.

Personally I think the Bohemia people should close the trail for the rest of the year. You can only miss it if it isn't there.

Troy and Kathy's crew at LLB have any idea who it might be? I hope this storm produces next week for them to help with opening!

This is really sad. It was pretty cool when this ski area opened because it revived a project that was started many years ago and abandoned. In spite of the odds they seem to be making a go of it.

Even though it operates on a very small budget, in past years Mount Bohemia has given a break to locals by offering low cost season passes (around $100 - $125 for a year).

I've skied Mount Bohemia and it is an experience that is not found elsewhere in the Midwest. It is a real asset to the Keweenaw area.

Unfortunately all off-road motorsports offer the opportunity to be destructive and some people just can't resist. It really does fuel the fires of the media and the snowmobiling opposition.

This would only punish a business in the area that depends on that trail being open as well as the law abiding snowmobilers that use that trail and would do nothing to punish the idiots that went up the ski hill.

Sort of like punishing the cat because the dog peed on the carpet IMO.

I hope they catch these folks and make them pay with money. That is about the only thing folks in our society react to these days. A couple of days in jail or a useless conviction of disorderly conduct/destruction of property means nothing to losers like this.

I got a better punishment! Tie them up to the chair lift poles and as the skiers come by they can wack them with there poles for poaching there lines! Boarders can come by and wack them with small saplings!!!

But, unfortunately LacLaBelle lodge/Bear Belly will suffer if that happens. This is the only trail to their property. Lots of sledders stay, eat and get fuel there. I think that shutting down the trail is too harsh for Troy and Kathy's business. Plus they do a lot for the Keweenaw trail system with being one of the main sponsors for the trail clean up in the fall. Also, they give towards/sponsor John's Guest Bartender gig in January for Make a Wish Foundation. LacLaBelle lodge is a BIG deal for the area. Extremely unfortunate circumstances.

I hope the word spreads and we can get someone to turn them in. I'd be willing to contribute to an award fund for anyone turning these jokers in!
