LAC LA BELLE - Snowmobilers are asked to be respectful when using local trails this winter.
An incident occurred Wednesday night at Mount Bohemia where it appears snowmobiles left the Lac La Belle Trail, which crosses the mountain, and caused damage to the ski hill.
"Overall, over the last three years, we've had no incidents of snowmobile (issues)," said Lonnie Glieberman, president of Mount Bohemia. "This is hopefully a very isolated incident."
Glieberman said there has not been an incident with snowmobilers at the mountain in a few years.
"We've had virtually no issues at all for three straight years," he said. "The trail is far enough away that we don't have issues but it's only a few snowmobilers out of thousands that were the problem."
Glieberman said the issue was frustrating to deal with but has been worked out. Understanding the importance of snowmobiling and skiing in the Keweenaw, Glieberman asks users to be mindful of others.
"It's been working great, but it's also a low snow year," he said. "This is a very isolated incident. Snowmobilers who come to Lac La Belle have been very respectful and very good to us."
Glieberman said he is confident the issue happened at night and he just wants to ensure the safety of others.
"The snowmobile club has done a great job keeping them off our property for three straight years," he said. "Stay on the trail, enjoy the Keweenaw, for your safety, please stay off the mountain."
A Facebook posting on the Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula page Thursday asked snowmobilers to stay on the trails and respect private property.
The posting also stressed the importance of being able to open the hill Saturday.
Glieberman said the area has been cleaned and groomed and they plan to open Saturday.
