In every sport there are those who abuse and leave a trail of destruction. From boating to sailing...someone is going to try and make us look bad.

Each time the sport suffers for it.

While I would not hesitate to rat out those who would make it tough on the rest of the sledding world, I have to remember that to castigate everyone for the acts of a few is just as wrong.

I believe we all need to police our sport, but we must realize that just like the goons who ran deer down last winter, there are those who were accidentally dropped on their heads as a child and they are going to do these things...because they CAN.

There is no shame in turning them in and if we all do our part in working to keep the sport safe and free of these insanely stupid abuses, we help everyone else who do not abuse the sport we love.

Did they have any signs up? Just kidding. Unfortunately there are to many people who think they can go anywhere. When I was a trail boss down here we would always have problems with idiots screwing things up for all the ones that put alot of work into the trail system. I hate to imagine what it's going to be like down here{northern IL and Southern Wis} when we get our first snow.Hope they catch them.

Can somebody post the details of this on HCS, if it hasn't been done already?

Spreading the word will increase the chances of these punks getting caught and let others know that this isn't cool.

This would only punish a business in the area that depends on that trail being open as well as the law abiding snowmobilers that use that trail and would do nothing to punish the idiots that went up the ski hill.

Sort of like punishing the cat because the dog peed on the carpet IMO.

I hope they catch these folks and make them pay with money. That is about the only thing folks in our society react to these days. A couple of days in jail or a useless conviction of disorderly conduct/destruction of property means nothing to losers like this.-John

Couldn't of said it any better, or agreed more.

Hiting them in the Wallet is the ONLY thing that'll stop stupid.
Fines or Restitution needs to be substantial.

It still amazes me that people do this kind of thing knowing darn well how fragile some of our leases are on private land.
No one that calls themselves a snowmobiler can say "they didn't know" about the rules of private land crossings.
No one goes riding without checking a site or a hotline for current trail conditions.. Every trail conditions source out there makes it very clear what the rules are!! STAY ON THE TRAIL WHEN ON PRIVATE PROPERTY OR WE RISK LOSING THAT TRAIL.... Pretty simple to figure out to me!

That's not even the issue. The trail doesn't even go close to the Mountain.

A couple things you all should know. The management at Mt Bohemia is very anti snowmobile. I know a couple people who pulled into the parking lot and were tackled and assaulted because they were on snowmobiles. They were stopping in to get a candy bar and a drink from the concessions tent.

There was no way they were going to have a successful opening yesterday. The weather and the snow were horrible either way. The hill was in bad shape before anybody climbed the hill on a snowmobile because people have been tele skiing for the last couple weeks and exposing lots of rocks. I was up there yesterday and couldn't see any evidence of damage from any snowmobiles from the bottom of the hill. It looked the same as it did last week but with more rocks exposed at the top.

I do not agree with trespassing on the hill but I also think it's being blown way out of proportion by the owner.

i have seen a large increase in stupid behavior this year.

In the last week this is what I have witnessed.
-a group of sleds crossed M28 without slowing down. I laid rubber on the highway stopping. late night is no excuse to skip stopping.
-2x along the LP Walsh (White Pine area), the trail appears wet, sleds have moved to the road. Fine. Travel with traffic, not against it and stay on the shoulder. Not cool to meet 6-8 sleds in the middle of my lane coming head on.
-Drove along M28 at in the afternoon. Sleds driving on the trail along the highway at about the same speed as traffic. Stop sign after stop sign (driveways) that were never even slowed down for (60 mph). Forget the folks in the cars...it is pretty risky if you ask me.

Not many places in the world there is as much freedom as we have here. And snow fever probably has set in, but that is not an excuse to act like a buck during the rut and not use our brains.

January is a bit early to hear locals grumbling....but they are. PLEASE, HAVE FUN....BUT BEHAVE!

do not trespass or any of the other dumb things...we like to have it free up here...for us and for you all to come and visit.

First off. Excuse me JD for I am watching da lions and am intoxicated.
Motor_slut. Your post is stupid!! Trail location nor the owners attitude plays into this. None of your reasons gives anyone the right to do what was done and no one cares if u think they didn't have good conditions to open TODAY or not!!
STAY ON THE TRAIL AND OFF PRIVATE PROPERTY! !!

John,

I know my thought is extreme and is rare for it to happen in a tourist area, but it happens. I have felt for a long time that the best thing for this sport is to not even put the trails in for a year. Send the signal that riding is a privilege and not a right (it is in certain areas). The trails don't just magically appear and disappear.

I am sick and tired of going to landowners and literally BEGGING them to not shut down a trail because of something stupid like this. Most times we are successful, sometimes we're not and a trail is closed and business lose money.

We need to police each other.....we don't want outside influences telling us what we can and can't do.

I'm off the pulpit now.....

I can't believe you would defend these idiots in any way! I don't care if they had only driven across a corner of the ski hill, we all know better. Your point that the hill isn't even close to the trail makes it even worse IMO. They had to sit and plan this out, which makes it even more malicious! Premediated tresspassing. I think if I was the management at Mt. Bohemia I would be anti snowmobiling too. This action cannot be defended!

Driving a car on road when sleds around is about the same to me as seeing deer appear on the shoulder. Slow down & put your D driving skills on the field. Happened to me today with sleds crossing FR. No idea if they knew I was there but I know trail jogs at this spot on road for 100 yards so brought it down about 5mph & sure enough they turned in front of me but no big deal just stopped & waved them across. I ride so know beelers may have limited visabilty in helmet so no big deal for me to be more careful when sleds around. Beelers bring big bucks to area so I'm cool with a few mistakes which may seem like HUGE mistakes to others. Trespassing that is unlawful no matter what the sport or mode of transportation. Just not acceptable anywhere or anytime.:(

Saw this last week on the guy's property across from Krupps' mini mart. There are two "no snowmobile" signs along the trail and there's tracks all over the place...

This is a rediculous response, and i find it hard to believe the sledders were "tackled and assaulted". I'm calling BS on this.......

I manage a backcountry ski area with a snowmobile trail crossing it. I have knowledge on who owns Bohemia and why they were never going to open regardless of trespassing or not. Apparently you missed the part where it was only trespassing because they were on snowmobiles. I guess it's not trespassing if it's on ski's? For all we know they were skiers who caught rides up to the top like they used to do before it was a ski hill. I never defended the people who did this I simply pointed out a double standard.

[h=1]Snowmobiles damage Mount Bohemia[/h][h=5]January 6, 2012[/h]By STACEY KUKKONEN - DMG writer (skukkonen@mininggazette.com) , The Daily Mining Gazette
Save |
LAC LA BELLE - Snowmobilers are asked to be respectful when using local trails this winter.
An incident occurred Wednesday night at Mount Bohemia where it appears snowmobiles left the Lac La Belle Trail, which crosses the mountain, and caused damage to the ski hill.
"Overall, over the last three years, we've had no incidents of snowmobile (issues)," said Lonnie Glieberman, president of Mount Bohemia. "This is hopefully a very isolated incident."
Glieberman said there has not been an incident with snowmobilers at the mountain in a few years.
"We've had virtually no issues at all for three straight years," he said. "The trail is far enough away that we don't have issues but it's only a few snowmobilers out of thousands that were the problem."
Glieberman said the issue was frustrating to deal with but has been worked out. Understanding the importance of snowmobiling and skiing in the Keweenaw, Glieberman asks users to be mindful of others.
"It's been working great, but it's also a low snow year," he said. "This is a very isolated incident. Snowmobilers who come to Lac La Belle have been very respectful and very good to us."
Glieberman said he is confident the issue happened at night and he just wants to ensure the safety of others.
"The snowmobile club has done a great job keeping them off our property for three straight years," he said. "Stay on the trail, enjoy the Keweenaw, for your safety, please stay off the mountain."
A Facebook posting on the Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula page Thursday asked snowmobilers to stay on the trails and respect private property.
The posting also stressed the importance of being able to open the hill Saturday.
Glieberman said the area has been cleaned and groomed and they plan to open Saturday.

Thanks for posting that Skylar! It sure sounds like the president of Mount Bohemia is very level headed about this, I'm very impressed. It looks like the efforts of the snowmobile club have been outstanding and lots of the credit goes to them for leaving that impression with Lonnie. What a cool guy, he could have had the complete opposite response.
