Stand up Mowers "Gravley"

Bought a new home a few months back and mow just over an acer on a 42" tractor it took me all most 3 hours the first cutting and now I am down to about 2:15. The lot is not smooth by any means has a ton of trees and a mound system that is to steep to side hill so you have to go over the top and around. I have been doing some reseach and think the stander style mower is the way to go. I have looked at the Gravley pro-stance does anyone have gravley products either a 48"or 52" I am going to have a one dropped off to demo next week I found a review from lawnsite.com the guy who wrote it was a commercial guy and did a nice job with the review
Just figured I would throw it out and see if anyone had any thoughts

Wright Stander makes a great stand up I've put them on some pretty steep grade as long as the grass was dry.I've heard of gravley just no experience with them but never really heard anything bad about them though.Your thinking is right going with a 48 or 52 anything bigger likes to scalp.

A lot of stand up riders on here. Often wear backpacks with gardening tools or helmets with Mohawks. Others prefer a seat to sit on.

the only downside to standers is the ability to add a vacuum. That said, the "hang on" or side catchers work very well, but it can just be a pain to dump every other pass in the fall.
IMO a 52-54 is a good size deck for a home owner with an acre. Should take about an hour to hour+15 to get it out of the garage, mow, blow machine off, and put it away.

Wright makes a great product. They also make a "sport model" that you can either sit or stand on like a sled, (with or without mohawks).;) Wright also makes the standers for John Deere in case you have a Deere dealer nearby.

I was wondering the same as polarismike. Why get a standup when you can sit? I can see standups used in commercial mowing applications but as a homeowner? FWIW - the home we own is on a 2.5 acre lot. Up until this year, I was mowing 1.5 acres and leaving the extra acre alone. It has pasture grass that a local farmer could come in and cut and roundbale. We liked the way it looked cut down vs. the tall grass and the tall grass was a tick and critter magnet.

This spring I finally bought a new lawn tractor to replace the 18 yr old Simplicity (38" deck) I was using. I went back and forth between a bigger lawn tractor and a zero turn (ZT) , finally settling on a 27 hp Simplicity Prestige lawn tractor with a 52" fabricated deck. Main reasons staying with a tractor were:

1. Can put a blower on a tractor
2. Can pull ground engaging implements like rollers and plug aerators
3. I thought a ZT would be uncomfortable to ride as our lawn is very bumpy and uneven.

Unfortunately the new Prestige has been in the shop 2X now (1 = engine oil leak, 2 = hydro power steering leak) for warranty work and the last time the dealer loaned me a demo Hustler ZT with a 52" deck. While I like the Hustler ZT I'm happy I made the choice of staying with a Simplicity tractor. The ZT scalps the lawn in too many places and is generally hard on the lawn (tears it up on turns). I couldn't pull a roller, etc. with it either. But boy is it FAST! If I could afford to own both I would. Assuming I could get a ZT with a free floating deck (that won't scalp) I could learn to mow and not tear up the lawn on turns.

Sorry for the long winded post and don't mean to hijack the thread......just thought I'd share my experience. :)

The reason people go with a standing style mower is they handle sides of hills better weigh less and are much easier on the back then a sitting style tractor. They call them Standers but they are really more of a lean they have theigh pads to lean against and you can also get a small little a$$ pad like the Wright mower also.
I may have found a better solution instead of buying a 6-8k mower I talked the neighbor kid who's family can not afford to have the mower they have repaired into mowing my yard for $20 and I would maintain and provide the mower and gas to mow their lawn. By the time I mow, hand mow and trim I am in it 3 hours. I figure there lawn will use 2 gallons at the most. We will see how this works out.
I am pretty happy with the deal and may now be able to buy a new AXYS with the mower money. Maybe, we will see what the wife has to say

Those are the same reasons Lenny bought a new sled this year :)
