stator testing

I did the tests for resistance on the components the manual had listed and all seem fine. I am missing something here. I didn't see a procedure to test the cdi unit. This manual has terminology that seems confusing but none the less very helpful. I'm gonna go out and do it all over again. If it don't run, does anybody know of a high bridge close to my house

engine stop switch is bad, seems like throttle switch is also bad. I live a few blocks from a Yamaha dealer and am good friends with the guy over there. They told me to simply disconnect the engine stop switch connector to eliminate that problem (kill switch) and to disconnect the TORS wires and reconnect the harness side. I've done that and still no spark. Looks like the manual says after all those tests and still no spark, replace the cdi unit. That's why there is no test for the CDI unit self, everything else is eliminated and the CDI unit has no test. Makes sense I suppose. Looks like another expensive little bugger

i'd definatly try and swap it with a good one to test if thats it and if it is, buy a used one. You never wanna see a sled go to rest...

I took my cdi off today and dropped it off at the Yamaha shop to compare to find a used one. They didn't have one so I cannot test it. Dang,,,, I don't wanna buy one yet. The 480 fan is a great motor and used for many many years in other model Yammi sleds. The venture does not share cdi with any other model, even in the same motor in different model sled. No luck on eBay either

lenny, I like the video that you linked, not so much that it shows how to properly test a stator, but that it touches on the major pitfall of resistance testing a stator or and other coil for that matter. If they fail the resistance test then they are for sure bad but if they pass it then they still may be bad, you still don't know for sure.

True....but most of the time it'll at least give you an idea if it is bad or not. SOmetimes if the sled will at least start and run you cna measusre the stator ohms after it warms up and if they are really high that is an indication that the stator is bad too.

I forgot to post that the sled is running and my problem was indeed the cdi unit. I followed the shop manual to a T, performed all the tests they described. All components passed and the final instruction was to replace cdi unit and "whala"!!!!!!!!! she runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ran here for 20 miles yesterday without a hitch
