On another site I visit this is one of the cross country trail groomers working on there trail system, this was not a trail crossing from what he posted. The sleds were off trail riding in the area, if this was a marked trail I'm sure he would have been watching for sleds. The front track pod was broken off, after the sleds were gone he was broken down on the trail.
As I posted on another thread here this off trail riding sure is in the spot light in more ways that one, the trickle down affect.

as mentioned watch their other vids, just another bobby boondocker. Yes the groomer should have stopped or slowed down, that was a bad call on his part. BUT my arguement is that its a ski trail the groomer was on.
So now when we are on the trail and it crosses a powerline we should stop and let these fools pass? or the trail groomers should stop and look both ways??
these kind of guys piss me off becasue this is a huge black eye for sledders and off trail riding in general, you know damn sure since their machine got damaged and the guy was left stranded there if they have the chance they will use that scenario against us.

what if that would have been a xcountry skier comming out on that trail. just a bunch of a holes
I have personal knowledge that this was the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club trail club groomer operated by a city employee grooming the ski trails within the Hancock city limits last Saturday morning. It is a Rhino UTV with strobes on top. It is unfortunate the sledder was very close to the tree line and the operator was focusing on the other riders more visible to him. The operator thought he had visual contact with all of the sleds but that turned out not to be the case. Wrong place, wrong time for both. This occurred on the power line ROW very close to, but NOT on the designated snowmobile trail. The ski club has now incurred several hundred dollars in repair damage to the track pods that they will have to eat. This will not endear boondock riding to skiers or landowners. But the real point hasn't appeared yet in these threads. That is, if the Rhino had instead been a cross country skier coming out of the woods on a ski trail maintained by City of Hancock on a snowy day this had the potential to be a fatality. The area north of the fairgrounds in Hancock is co-inhabited by the ski trails and snowmobile trails. There are three separate ski trail crossings of the designated snowmobile trail in the area just north of the fairgrounds. Please be cautious in the area on trail or off so everyone can enjoy the snow safely and landowners are not tempted to withdraw their permission for skiers or sleds.

I don't know these guys personnally...maybe they are jerks but the video posted IMO doesn't show them as causing the problem.
Would the "ATV groomer" driver slow down if he saw 4 deers go by or accelerate as he entered there path?

Ya they arent doing anything different that what everyother idiot that comes to the UP to boondock the powerlines. But what pissed me off is on the other site they were trying to seem so innocent and that the groomer has no business on their powerline.
Thank you jdiebel for the inside details on this...i bet the ski club has more then a few hundred dollars worth of repair costs to the machine and its a total shame they have to pay for it out of their pocket. Should have got the kids info like anyother accident. Odds are he probably doenst even have insurance anyway
T4T I didnt know you where from the UP. Are you not one of the idiots that come up and ride the power lines. If I remember correctly you had a vid of your sled stuck on the power lines in Twin Lakes last year.

you got me there i did have a video, showing there wasnt alot of snow. I dont come up to "ride the powerlines". that video we were but for maybe 1/2mile, headed to an area we like to ride that we cant get to easily. I understand your frusturations...and i wasnt trying to seem like a "keeper of the UP" i was just saying i have no sympathy for people who would blame the groomer driver for crossing their path and made it seem that they were not in the wrong. Im on the ski club/groomer side with this ones becasue id hate to see this stuff used as leverage when they start cracking down on riding off of the trail. I guess when i got stuck in my video i posted i should have been mad at the power company for not moving that stump i hit lol
all is good, sorry about my rants...guess im crabby i havent been riding yet. haha

My point is that no matter where you are, if both parties are on a motorized vehicle, both have the responsibility to be cautious.
if you are a skier or for that fact a pedestrian, unless you are looking for a lawsuit settlement in your favor, you best be responsible for your own actions or inactions...should be known as survival instincts lest you be lookin for some sort a payout.
Sometimes this site seems to be occupied by the opposition to snowmobiling.
