The new 800 A/C here, what about a "new" Yami?

Yamaha is very tight lipped about new releases unless they want to create a stir then will trickle pics like they did with SW. All the discussion on TY is Yamaha an engine company or a snowmobile company? This is Yamaha's 50th year anniversary for the 2018 release so many hoping for something to replace Vector and Apex. There is a huge product hole 130HP to 180HP so logical that another sled can fit between the Viper and Sidewinder. Pure Yamaha sleds seems minimal to me given the current Trump environment of assembled in USA or pay tariffs to bring products in to be sold in USA. IMO Neither Yamaha or AC will motivate the Yamaha core to buy up from Apex and Vector until EPS is offered in a new release sled. EPS is that good!

Not to pick you apart WD, but most people, including me, are looking for a Yami that does not need the power steering thing. Easy handling sled. I totally understand your likes of the Apex series sleds, the power and so forth. But I bet even you would like a sled that does what the Apex does, and not need the EPS. Something "new"? I would think the 50 year Anny should do it if it's going to happen.

Yamaha is for sure coming out with a new model. It is not a snowmobile though. It is a piano. They are going to change all the black keys into white keys and vica-versa. It will revolutionize the entire piano industry. But it will still be heavy.

Well Abe I have ridden both Viper and Sidewinder and both would be better with EPS due to the weight. The 4s weight will never go away so EPS right up Yamaha's tech wheelhouse and Yamaha not so good at tank weight reduction..lol.. Only way Yamaha drastically reduce weight other than engine weight is carbon fiber platform which would be very expensive...possible but not likely unless you want a $20K sled....lol IMO 2018 is the year of sharing EPS with Cat ...easy & will be an inexpensive hit for the core and 50th ann. Maybe shoehorn Apex engine in SW another Yamaha faithful fav push stock SW to 200HP bring in Apex at 165hp and Vector goes bye bye. Otherwise BNG and Apex/Vector go unchanged until parts run out which is logical but unappealing.

Yes a game changer for sure! lol

I think if Yamaha comes out with something it will be a smaller base platform that can be used in may different areas. I could be wrong but Yamaha for sure has a hole there. Grub good point, they for sure make more money selling those than powersports:) Better to be versatile I say, if you aren't in the U.P. you don't last long:) Ask Harley if they wish they were more versatile right now:)

OMG - this gets serious consideration for best jab/joke of the year!

So far I love my Viper but the only complaint I have is it doesnt turn the easiest in twisties in Northern Wi. I had the Apex with the EPS and definately would be awesome to have on the Viper.I mostly ride the UP so I will live without EPS but would be nice.I miss the Apex power a little but the Viper handling and fun factor driving it is worth it IMO

Like I said, a very good handling/balanced sled that does not need power steering =(less weight/better balance).

I disagree abe...4 strokes are always gonna be heavier than two strokes....eps is sweet, and makes the heavy apex/vectors...so much easier to ride....my 90 lbs ...15 year old daughter can drive can drive my apex (not that I let her drive it much...it's too much sled motorwise for her)....put it on the viper/sidewinder...along with the throttle by wire, and other yamaha goodies....and u might convert a few yamaha loyalists over....i hate to say it...but if ski doo adds eps to their 4 strokes (solo touring, and touring sleds)...you might see some yamaha defections...especially if there is no new apex model...some guys don't want a turbo, and don't want a two stroke...but the viper isn't enough...a new apex fits nicely in the line up (right between the viper and SW).

Yes I agree Attak man that the 4 strokes are always going to be heavier. Too many hard/heavy parts in a valve train. No way around it. But if the chassis and engine are both designed together from the start, you get a better balance/ handling sled (CG). I have rode the Vector, Apex, and Vipers. I have not rode a SideWinder as I don't need that kind of power. Yami engines are very good, no dought about it. But even the Yami/Cats, (Viper/AC7000's) do not come close to the balance/ handling of the Doo 4 stroke sleds. This is why I have had hopes that Yami would come with a chassis/ engine designed together that would accomplish the balance/handling. I don't want a snowmobile that needs power steering, and it doesn't appear very many others do either.

I have to disagree with you Abe no matter how well balanced a 4s sled is it will always benefit from EPS. Attak man is correct again if Doo 4s sleds had EPS I would more seriously consider their 4s sleds. Doo is still lacking the 4s HP I want at 160ish but EPS can't be ignored. Once you have EPS and jump from sled to sled without EPS you sure miss it. Both the Viper and Sidewinder would benefit big time from EPS but maybe Yamaha is holding the tech for their sleds?

I also want to add...that most yamaha riders don't really care about two strokes...we've accepted the direction the company took back in 03 with the rx1....knowing full well we'd be ridding heavier machines...but that we'd have unmatched reliability, and decent fuel economy. My friends who didn't like the heavier four strokes switched brands...most went to ski doo....at this point in time I just don't see yamaha making a two stroke...and I don't think it would sell well to their core buyer....which imo is older trail riders...we like the low maintenance 4 strokes....that's why many of us don't want a turbo, and are skeptical of the viper...now put eps on a viper or a yamaha version of the Pantera, and watch sales take off.....I really hope yamaha has a new chassis....if not...start sharing their tech with cat...cause that's the direction I will go.
