The Thread About Snowmobiles

OK, I'm going to start a thread about Snowmobiles since the last six months we've covered the Covid Pandemic until we're numb between the ears. Going forward (on this thread) we'll only discuss snowmobiles, the people who ride them, good things, bad things, it doesn't matter. NO MENTION of the "C" Word, the "P" Word, or any mention of the Flu will be allowed.

Some ideas would include trailers. trips, belts, best burger, new sleds, old sleds, getting lost, getting found, off trail, on a lake, up the creek, and through the woods.

This will be a small corner of the JohnDee world that will be free of any mention of illness, elections, or foul smelling subject matter. Let's give her a try, shall we?

*Violators will be forced to listen to Governor Evers sing "On Wisconsin" followed by "Roll Out the Barrel"*
(Like fingernails on a chalkboard)

Debating jumping in to the 4 stroke world, have a 2021 Polaris matryx 850 ordered but I have been debating trying a 4 stroke the last couple seasons. Maybe a 137 sidewinder or thundercat (basically same sled).

All trail miles and forest roads, usually 2,500-3k a season.

Whats everyone’s thoughts? Anyone made the jump recently?

With the miles I put on (Usually 4-5k per season) I have seriously thought about it. But I just can't bring myself to it. Having ridden with guys who have them, they just don't go through the twisties like a 2-stroke, and if you do, you feel it at the end of the day. At least that's what the guys I've ridden with say.

Like yourself, I went with a 2021 Polaris 850 XCR, but in the "old" Switchback chassis, mostly for the 4-year warranty. I know I'll use it. And if a 'fix' is slow, I still have two I can hop on and go at a moments notice.

With that said, I got my old iron up on the rack in the garage this weekend!

XCR you have to paint the boards underneath your suspended XCR RED. Then it will look even nicer. ERK, I am flopping the other way. I have a Sidewinder and I am going back to a smoker. Like XCR said the heavy 4 strokers plain and simple do not go through the twisties as well as a lighter sled. The newer SRXes are lower to the ground than my '18 but they are no lighter. Plus Yami/Cat has not addressed some of the inherent design flaws. If I were going to spend 18 grand I would get a VR1. The 'Doo guys will chime in and say their 900Ts are lighter and turn on a dime. I have never ridden a newer 'Doo so I don't know. But I have ridden a Sidewinder many miles and now I want something lighter. I won't be riding this season because I have to heal up from ankle surgery. But I am very interested to see how the new Matryx works. Especially the 650. However ERK if you want to try a Sidewinder I am going to sell mine. For a lot less than 18 grand.

Huh, I'll have to think about that, obviously need to finish painting the few I was short in my original design. I've already decided to end for end it - That may make it look better, seeing more red.

Haven't heard that my VR1 is ready but I do take delivery of this thursday. Its 7x18 plus 5ft V nose. Built to order from RnR trailers. Added 110v outlets, reverse lights, galvanized axles, and loading lights. Its the trailer I think I have always wanted... Hopefully my 1/2 ton pulls it ok!! IMG-4135.jpg IMG-4133.jpg

I haven’t heard any updates on my VR1 either, but did receive a swag package in the mail. Guess we’ll wait and see when they actually arrive.

slimcake, 110v outlets? are you going to have generator to power or...stupid question because my truck has 110v outlet inside of cab, are you able to tap into that circuit and run into trailer that way? Nice looking trailer, had an R&R 2 place, was a well built trailer.

I just got my swag package also. At least I felt good knowing that they actually had my order since I've heard nothing else. I did hear Poo is going to be shipping sleds without front shocks potentially due to a supplier issue. They'll then ship the shocks to be installed at the dealer. Gotta be easier to do it that way than to bring a bunch of almost done sleds back into the factory to install shocks on them. Hopefully they get it figured out soon or I'll be riding my wifes old RMK for awhile.

Yeah, haven't heard a peep either. I'm assuming the 'old' chassis will be one of the last to roll off the lines. As for shocks, not much we can do about that, better to get them at the dealer for a 20 minute bolt up in the future, than sending scheduled trucks away empty. Backups are a nice luxury!

I was always polaris 2 stroke 600, 700 and 800's. I switched 2 years ago to a doo 1200 renegade. Overall the sled is heavier and not good off trail but on trail I can run the twisters about as fast but I find I'm not working as hard it's more of a smooth ride. That being said I sold it and upgraded to the 900t, I was debating going with a polaris assault 800 or 850 but I've been wanting to try a 900t with a tune so I decided to go that route. I still have a polaris switchback 600 as well that I'll likely upgrade to an assault 850 next season.

If you have a newer half ton you'll be fine. I've Towed my last two 27' enclosed with f150, ram 1500 and silverado 1500 and all did it fine.

In 2017 I purchased a A/C 9000 turbo 4..... I ride about 3k miles a season most on Vilas twisties...I absolutely loved the sled, rode it about 5k miles before selling...was a lazy boy chair with a jet engine, but heavy.

After a 100 plus mile day, the sled tired me out, so in 2019 I went back to a 600 2 stroke, miss the speed but not tired after a big day anymore.. Going now to a Riot 8000, so I should have more punch, with less weight.

Have a place in St.Germain also. Have a 2019 SW. You will never regret it. Went from a 2010 Vector. Handles great and unbelievable power when ever you need it, and I am in my 60s

Bought an Apex last February from Kip, that, along with my RMK, will make for a fun riding season coming up. When off trail is set up, I'll jump on the Apex and let r rip tater chip!

IMG_20200531_120614_copy_907x1612.jpg About 1/2 way through the rear skid on this ol pig. Its actually really cool to tear an older sled completely down and rebuild it. Makes the ol mid week pizza runs that much more satisfying.

I also cannot ride this season due to shoulder surgery. I suggested to my wife to let her sister ride my sled to go with her. She said her sisters eyes light up and had the biggest smile she saw in a long time!
