I was reading the I like yer dogs thread...and got to thinking that the majority of sledders have not encountered much on a trail....so lets list a few to help em out and maybe slow em a tad or at least they will be more cautious...heres my short list

teams of dog sleds
moose
herd of deer
turkeys
grouse
porcupine
people walking
wildlife radio tracker person
bear
pickup trucks
atvs
weasels
otters
mink
wolves
elk
logging truck
cars

some tips.....never ever never go fast by a porcupine...avoid at all costs and let him walf off trail....moose...be ready for reverse or off trail at 90 degrees even if its into thickets and saplings....deer....be ready for anything....once a deer jumped over me head as I was going under his belly at 70....we stopped and tuft of hair in black window strip on top....just split the defenders legs....logging truck....alls I can say is all 3 of us jumped off our sleds over an embankment whilst I looked into the cab and saw a frightened man turning the wheel like crazy and slidding sideways....passed by me sled within 2 inches if bars....thought we was all dead....trust me....you gotta be extra careful at ALL TIMES on a sled trail...hence the name...TRAIL....so what are some of ya others encounters????

You forgot being 1st sled on site at sled meets tree event. I have been at 2 of those with oncoming sleds & pulled one lady to the side sat her on my sled pulled her sled off tree and another separate wreck pulled father and son with 2up off a tree then looked at kids leg told Dad check it out kid was hiding injury. The biggest scare was the kid who fell off his sled 10 feet in front of me on twisty... holy moly that one was close and REALLY shook me up!!!!! Picked the kid up dusted him off got him going again.

coyotes. Chased one quite a ways down the trail and finally caught up with him and ran him over. Before I could look back he got up and was running through the woods. Those are tough animals!!

Pretty much everything listed above. A few years ago in Price County I found a tree stand that consisted of an old car, minus the engine, that had been lifted up into a tree about 10 to 15 feet above the ground. No idea how they got it out in the middle of no where and then hoisted it up into a tree.

On another occasion I found a small tree littered with women's underwear hanging from the branches. Not sure what happened there but it looks like I missed all the fun.

I forgot....BUFFALO...and I have never seen a mountain lion right in front of me....but I did see the tracks which were made minutes after we went thru.....3 times.....in miles spacing....and then I knew....that damn thing was tracking us....I later learned from the groomer operator that right before I stopped him to talk about it...he had gone outside to remove rocks and the thing tried to get him several times....he said he was not getting out again while he talked from the cab....and suggested we leave the area for a spell and not go the way he was....do I even want to tell you about the strange shazz that has happened???? ok, I wont go there....LOL

FYI; they are definitely out there, my wife and I saw one cross the road in front of us in the truck three years ago on WI HWY 45 about 10 miles south of Monico near Pelican lake.

A skunk went between me and my buddy doing about 60 mph. I thought that thing was going to end up in my track.

For those who ride in Columbia Co WI - you will know where I am talking about - but we had to stop because there was a heard of cows in the middle of the trail. They would not moooove (pun intended) and went forward inch by inch. I think they were curious to what was going on.

The scariest - buddies sled was overheating up by Muni. So we pulled off on the side of the trail to let it cool off. It was probably around 10:30 pm on a Friday night. The night was peaceful and we were admiring all the stars. Next thing we know, I heard a cat growl sound. I thought maybe I was hearing things, so I asked my buddy. He said he heard it too. We talked for a few seconds to figure out what it was, and then we heard it again, but 1/2 the distance as before. We jumped on our sleds and got the h*ll out of there. That night we listened to recordings of both mountain lions and bobcats. Could have been either one.

Goin at pretty good clip one nite, I took my eyes off the trail for one second, looked back just in time to catch a glimpse of a BIG brown blob down low and WHAMMO. Def a jolt but kept going. I swear it was Sasquatch. Of course no pictures.

Turkey, grouse, owl, deer, atv's, and a truck. Surprised I don't see much up here. I thought I would see more wildlife in the U.P. but I definitely see more in the lower. Guess it's just more space for them up here.
The deer was the worst. Jumped right over the lead sled. They like to zig zag and jump in and out of the trail.
I was attacked by an owl in Atlanta, MI while snowmobiling at night. That was interesting........

I didn't see fat bikes on anyone's list. Three years in a row in different areas I've seen them. Other than that, seeing a mini van buried up to the floor boards a mile from the nearest intersection was definitely puzzling. No idea how it got there or where it came from.

11 years ago I had an Apex. I had just filled it up with gas and I had just eaten 3 chili dogs and about 2 gallons of Bud Light so I was about 980 lbs rolling down the trail. It was about 4 in the morning and I was riding alone because you can do that on a Yami. I only had about 250 miles to go when I rounded a tight left and there was BIGFOOT having his way with a hibernating bear. The purr of the 4 cylinder 4 stroke startled the massive creature and he withdrew his 'Foot root from the dozing bear. As he rose up to his full height of around 11 feet I calmly threw my Apex into reverse and began backing up. The Bigfoot was starting to come toward me but was having trouble seeing because of the blinding headlight of the Apex. Looking back I am sure the Bigfoot knew that he was in trouble with the Wisc DNR that deals with violating hibernating bears and he wanted to leave no witnesses. This being an '06 Apex I didn't have power steering and it wasn't long before I lost control and slammed into a maple tree about three feet around with my rear bumper. The tree fell over from the impact and startled the Bigfoot. ( A little bit of the chrome on the snowflap on the Apex got rubbed off from the impact. Otherwise OK.) Now my only chance at survival was to put the sled into Forward and can it so I did. Luckily my 45 lbs of studs hooked up instantly and I went right between the Bigfoot's legs!!!!! As I zoomed away I couldn't resist taunting the monstrous beast. I turned my head back and yelled - " That is the smallest wang I have ever seen on a Bigfoot!! " This was the wrong thing to do. He started chasing me taking strides about 9 feet long at a time. The trail was tight and it was all I could do to keep ahead of the Bigfoot until I finally got to a lake and squeezed the flipper tight. The Bigfoot dissapeared into the snowdust and I thought I had it made. It was at that instant that the crappy Yamaha skis hooked a little piece of ice and I went end over end. When I came to rest the Apex was upside down and steaming. I myself was stunned and could do nothing as the Bigfoot came in for the kill. It was only ten feet away with death in its eyes when I said my final prayer. " Lord, this is your humble servant Grub. I am sorry I put gum in my sister's hair in 1977. I need a little help here. " I opened my eyes just in time to see the Bigfoot crash through the lake ice and drown an icy death. Who knew that Bigfoots are heavier than Apexes????

You can do this on a Polaris too, just as P.D.
