things encountered on a sled trail

11 years ago I had an Apex. I had just filled it up with gas and I had just eaten 3 chili dogs and about 2 gallons of Bud Light so I was about 980 lbs rolling down the trail. It was about 4 in the morning and I was riding alone because you can do that on a Yami. I only had about 250 miles to go when I rounded a tight left and there was BIGFOOT having his way with a hibernating bear. The purr of the 4 cylinder 4 stroke startled the massive creature and he withdrew his 'Foot root from the dozing bear. As he rose up to his full height of around 11 feet I calmly threw my Apex into reverse and began backing up. The Bigfoot was starting to come toward me but was having trouble seeing because of the blinding headlight of the Apex. Looking back I am sure the Bigfoot knew that he was in trouble with the Wisc DNR that deals with violating hibernating bears and he wanted to leave no witnesses. This being an '06 Apex I didn't have power steering and it wasn't long before I lost control and slammed into a maple tree about three feet around with my rear bumper. The tree fell over from the impact and startled the Bigfoot. ( A little bit of the chrome on the snowflap on the Apex got rubbed off from the impact. Otherwise OK.) Now my only chance at survival was to put the sled into Forward and can it so I did. Luckily my 45 lbs of studs hooked up instantly and I went right between the Bigfoot's legs!!!!! As I zoomed away I couldn't resist taunting the monstrous beast. I turned my head back and yelled - " That is the smallest wang I have ever seen on a Bigfoot!! " This was the wrong thing to do. He started chasing me taking strides about 9 feet long at a time. The trail was tight and it was all I could do to keep ahead of the Bigfoot until I finally got to a lake and squeezed the flipper tight. The Bigfoot dissapeared into the snowdust and I thought I had it made. It was at that instant that the crappy Yamaha skis hooked a little piece of ice and I went end over end. When I came to rest the Apex was upside down and steaming. I myself was stunned and could do nothing as the Bigfoot came in for the kill. It was only ten feet away with death in its eyes when I said my final prayer. " Lord, this is your humble servant Grub. I am sorry I put gum in my sister's hair in 1977. I need a little help here. " I opened my eyes just in time to see the Bigfoot crash through the lake ice and drown an icy death. Who knew that Bigfoots are heavier than Apexes????

Awesome story and but it looks like you might a cut it short to punch out at 3

Things you do NOT want to meet …

In a car on the road, never mind a sled on the trail. It's a M-m-m-ooose! :grief:

The lists seem to just about cover everything I have seen, but need to add three more things: sheep and llama (near Lodi), and witness to a deer-vs-deer accident in Waupaca County (T-boned)...the bigger one took off but the smaller one took a short time to recover his/her senses before getting up and running off also.

An old bud told me he once came across a fatality on sled trail. Apparently the guy blew a corner and went into a field. But the field had a barbed wire fence around it. My bud said he was the first on the scene. Guy was decapitated.

Not sure if its true or not. Would have been quite a few years ago, maybe 15-20?

Yes there were some foul balls stringing wire and ropes on private land that would take a rider off his sled or worse. Cops told them to cut it out before they kill someone and they stopped. I'm not sure of the the legal view point but the moral side of it is just crazy imo.

my friends and I came over a hill and around a corner to find a guy who didnt quite make the corner, he missed the bridge over the drainage ditch but basically jumped the ditch, hit the high tensile wire on the far side and was taken off his sled.
He was walking around, pissed but alive, his helmet was ripped off his head by the wire! Talk about a close call!

Something similar happened in SW lower MI about 15 years ago. A group from IL were there with a new rider...he was bringing up the rear and they left him in the dust....first time riding and trying to keep up. He blew a corner and was decapitated by a barbed wire fence. Another group found him before his "buddies" did which didn't help the situation any. The aftermath was a legal mess. Both the farmer and the club were both sued by the widow. Farmer threatened to withdraw his land from trail system, etc. Sad situation and nobody won.

Friend of family was riding his new Doo 2 years ago on the Fox river, just south of Big Bend, WI, where it forks by HWY164. People were following a short trail along a fishing boat access, but bordering a corn field, and he was following tracks as the the lead sled. Didn't see the chain link fence farmer had put up to keep people from entering from road and going into his field, as opposed to the boat access just adjacent. He was found by his riding partners having been severely cut at the neck level, and bled out on the scene. Son knows the brothers, and we know the family. He was a wild kid - tragic. Just got the sled too - late March.

I have been through the experience of a friend a hitting barbed wire. He lived, but it was not simple.

I am glad that the UP is doing such a great job with the trail system. I wish riders would respect the work and stay on marked trails when it says "Stay On Trail".
