Thoughts on Riding Next Weekend?

Last week I heard there were some spots in Ontonagon that had room, Snow was good there and so was the trail to Greenland. We rented a house but it is likely already booked. It's called the Depot Lodge, older home 2 blocks from Pat's but fixed up nice inside.

Disappointed.... melting too fast today the sun is a killer.

Yes, I noticed in Baraga the sun had a much bigger impact yesterday than it did on the last thaw. I do think that winter will certainly be back, hopefully with lots of snow and below freezing temps to finish up the season! :) Excited for the Copper Dog 150 coming up here at start of March! Come on Winter!

Easy for u to say when u look out your window at 5 feet of snow.
When I look out mine and see grass (pretty much all year) and looking at the calendar I know it's done where I'm at. I'll most likely be golfing before I'm back on a sled.

Whats a good place to drop for a day in Greenland/Mass City?...
We're staying in Minocqua starting thurs, not to worried about thurs but I'm not sure how trails are going to hold out Fri and Sat in Wi. Its our only trip this year, going to try and make the best of it.

yes....you can ask KIP or SKYLAR or JD or anyone ya likes to double check me...but heres the dealio....you see the depth at SNOWY??? its just under 3 feet....that means....that in any given forest nearby and northwards....there is 5 1/2 feet of actual snow in the woods....if I am lie'in, I am die'in....so 40 on JD snow cover means in the algers plains and forests....its aboot double that depth...check on me and see

Just for arguments sake, thats not JD's map. It's satellite data straight from NOAA. I been using their maps for many years to find snow all over the country. One thing I've noticed over the years, they're amazingly accurate! Sure there's some extremely localized variations, especially in the yoop, but for the most part they're spot on. I'll report back on what I find on Monday.

Better stay up by John's cause the trails in Northern Wi./Western UP will be shot. I was out Tuesday and there were many open no snow areas on the trails AND just saw the Marquette weather guy call for 60 degrees Monday! ugh

this is not the map a snowmachiner would use....its very defective IMO and way off the mark most of the time with reality....I use SNOWY as a guage and dem cams since this is the 21 century now for an accurate depth dare snoluver1....doncha knows

hers another tipski.....its says 16.9 degrees at 9:30am on JD web page....I can ALWAYS cut that in half and that will be the degrees it is at in the target area.....I just checked and it says 8 degrees....the warm up will be miniscule at best for maybe an hour or so and then back down again...so much for bad trails and doom and gloom reports

PS...chords....heres what you do for an ACCURATE REPORT....become friends with someone in the target sledding area....they always respond juts how you said....but I do this to get an accurate measurement.....as most are old or do not sled or don't go outside or have zero clue outside the cabin....once getting them on the phone...I avoid that conversation and instead ask them....if you was to go outside in your yard....( and I previously know in their location whether is low and close to a lake or town or lower elevation so I can determine an accurate depth MESELF)....from their miniscule and vague info...when your in your yard....is it like to your ankle? or your knee? did you shovel out or did you hire a guy? if I walked to the shed with boots untied would snow get in or not? along with how ya doing and all dat jazz too. I talk to em for like a half an hour and joke around and stuff....after that you have a good solid idea if you should head up or not....just an FYI....see how it hit -13C on average last nite in target area which is 8 degrees at the same time as JD web page

Well I just got back from 3 days of riding the bush. Based out of Green Haven and rode north and west from there. Never touched a trail. Rode in the forest only. I took multiple measurements with my 6 ft avy probe. Each colored section on the prob = 9 inches. What I found from my multiple tests in different areas over the course of 3 days was an average of .....wait for it...... 40 inches! In other words, exactly what the satalite map told me I would find!!! Imagine that, science actually works. Who'd a thunk it?
