Time for a New Helmet?

Most manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every 5 years.
Assuming yours has never been needed to save your noggin in an accident, what say you?

They're just trying to sell more helmets.

Unless I've gotten in an accident where the helmet was impacted, I use them until I want a change, including my scoot helmets.

Every 5 years no way buy an expensive helmet every 20 years maybe just for improvements. Sold 2 original doo mods from the 90s and guy was happy to have them.

Retired my 15 year old Doo Mod for a Mod 3. Used it one season and rolled sled with head taking a 10’ skid. Retired Mod 3 and bought an Oxygen.
Basically if I take a hit to the nogging or see the foam is deteriorating it is time to change….

I have a pair of Mods of recent years, so I'm good. Our helmets for the Spyder are another story. The liners are delaminating so we'll replace those in the spring. A lot of people simply upgrade for the new features.

I've kept mine longer than 5 but not much figure I don't want to find out the hard way. My kids have out grew theirs first ones by 5 years the second helmets could have made it another year for one of them and the other one need a larger one... I also found a good deal so that made it worth it...

How do you like the Oxygen? I have had at least 4 or 5 BV2S and loved them but I picked up a leftover last year and it's not great, like my old ones. I wanted to buy an Oxygen but my buddies said it's really hot on warm days? I thought they came out with a fix for it though.

Euphoric has the part number for the vented O2 shield said it cured his hot head. PM him. I think new O2s have flow thru.

The new oxygen helmet comes with the flow shield. It helps but still a warm helmet overall. You can't beat it on the cold days. Great view out the shield. The flow shield does help with the weird glare at night that the oxygen helmet seems to have. Overall I like my oxygen and works great with communicator.

I don’t have the flow shield and will be getting one. With the current non-vented shield it takes some finesse. If your sled rca outlet cuts out while idling you need to open the shield while sitting. Some have had the rca controller go bad. Those are the only “cons” I can say.

I really like the helmet overall. Technically there are only two “dome” sizes (small/medium/ large & xl/2xl/3xl) and you outfit the padding to fit you. Critical you fit it before walking out of the store! I ended up going back in and using a combination of pads from a small dome and large dome. The cranium padding is a single removable unit that will allow you to dry it out overnight. The ear pads allow for noise cancelling cups or communicating speakers. Swapping out sun shield takes seconds and handy based on daily preference.

I'm probably about due for a new one. I don't live near the snow but will be in the milwaukee area in a month for a kids sport tournament. I may try to find a shop to try some one. Last helmet I bought from dennis kirk since they cover shipping each way, but that was kind of a hassle. I think it's hard to tell if a helmet fits just right without trying on a couple sizes. At least these days like someone else said the helmets have a couple of shell sizes with the padding providing more of the fine tuning, so if you get it wrong you can adjust.

I knew I wanted an O2 helmet ⛑️ and I knew Rob’s had them on sale Lava red was the best deal and to my surprise the large fit me best usually I’m an XL. O2 is sized without any head covering but I wear silk just to absorb head oils. I left my ear protection in too which causes a tighter fit. Helmet fitting is different at least with the O2. Hopefully you have knowledgeable help the girl that helped me knew what she was doing! Good luck with your shopping. 🛒

I miss having a visor over top, wish oxygen helmet had it. One thing I don't miss is the breath deflector, but would highly recommend if you would get a non current oxy helmet to get the vented shield, I think the current models come with it standard now.
