Howdy,
I'm looking at replacing my 1998 Chev Silverado half ton with 168K on it..BTW, this truck runs great...I've put a few items in it in the last year or two but now she runs great...Body is great, and it has been in the family since new..
I started by looking at a 2005 Chev Silverado 2500HD Ext cab with 16K on it, the dealer wanted $23,000...Great truck but a tad rich for me now..
Here is what I found yesterday..
2004 Chev Silverado 2500HD with 85K for $15,900..The NADA is $16,700 on this truck.•••• is more in my price range but the miles scare me a tad...In this economy I wonder why they ask such a high price? I've bot from this small dealer B4 and have had great service and would buy again...I'm just stuck on the mileage for the money thing...I've also considered just puttin mine up for sale then if/when it sells go ahead and then look.•••• would be nice to have the $$ on hand for a down pmt..The only reason for the 3/4 ton is now I pay to have my driveway plowed and could do it myself...I may just run the old 98 for another year and think about it later..

Here is the '04 with 85K for $15,900

Just sold a 2001 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 with 205,000 miles for $6000.00 truck was in great shape and ran excellent. replaced it with a 2009 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 brand new for $30,000 so the 2005 seems high priced. Make him a lower offer on the 2004 then leave the ball in his court alot of trucks out there that can be bought reasonable. also ask him the previous owners name and contact them. Good Luck

If you truck runs fine keep it as long as it not costing you alot of money each week. We are going into truck season right now so prices are high. Actually prices are really high on used trucks at the dealer auctions. I good way to check what auction prices are is to go on kbb.com. Just use average trade in and that will be a close range to what you should pay.

m8man, What does it cost to get your drive plowed?
A new plow will cost about 4 G's. How many times can you get your drive plowed for 4 G's?
Many times I have thought about getting a plow for my truck, but I have a guy that plows it for $20 bucks a shot. Plus I can stay in bed while my drive gets plowed.
Hang on to your old truck, and put yourself on a payment plan for 12 months. Pay yourself $500.00 a month into your savings until you have a nice chunk of change, then start shopping. Hopefully someone will get laid off, or a divorce will occur, then you can get a deal. Good Luck

It has been a while since I priced a used truck but I did see something on the t.v. the other day that used prices are on the rise. I am not spending your money for you so do what you want and buy what you want but if you ain't stapped to much I would buy new. By the age of the truck you currently have I take it you are like me and keep things around for a long time. If that is the case the hit you take on a new one really doesn't matter because you ain't traddin in every couple of years. But as far as the used ones go I would be like you and shy away from the one with the higher mileage.Just my 2 cents..

On a second note (again I don't know your money situation) I would think real hard about keeping the old one if you have the room (any money to do so) and buy a plow for it. Haveing a plow is nice, haveing a dedicated plow truck is even nicer...

m8man call your insurance company and ask them how much more it is going to cost you for the 3-4 months that you use a plow. I think that you will be quite supprised, I know that I was when I checked. If it were me I would buy a 4x4 tractor, and not a toy one either, with a loader on the front and put a plow on it or buy a snow blower for the three point on the back. You got the land by the pic's and you can always use a tractor with a loader for lots of things during the rest of the year. A plow is single purpose and you have to store it and look at it the rest of the year, let alone the wear and tear on the truck.

Put the plow on the old truck if you must have a plow.

I had a plow truck in addition the my personal driver and I was spending over $1000 a year to plow my drives. I hired someone for a lot less.

It is hard to make a plow pay for itself when you consider the cost of the equipment and upkeep and gas.

Once you put a plow on YOUR truck, it becomes a plow truck forever. Unless you sell it as a plow truck to someone you know the value (beating) will take a toll on it quickly.

The suggestion of buying a tractor or even putting a blade on your 4 wheeler is smarter because of the multiple use factor.

The price on used trucks is up significantly because few people want to take on a $450 month payment right now. So used is cheaper and smarter for most. This drives the price up on used trucks...and will do so for awhile yet.

I can only imagine what the value "drop" would be on buying a new truck adding a plow and then changing your mind in 3 years, trying to sell it. Might as well stand on the bridge and throw $50 dollar bills off it to passing boaters.

Take it from me, unless you intend on getting into the plowing business, it doesn't pay to do this. Be way better off to find a beater plow truck for $1500 or so, and just use it to plow your drive, or do the above.
