To Cold To Ride?

Coldest for me was -38F in Elliot Lake, Ontario. After pulling the rope on my 800 XCSP (if you could call it pulling) I was plenty warm. Never to cold to ride if you get the sled running. I did manage to con 2 young bucks to pull the rope a few times for me. lol

I picked the three coldest weeks to ride last season. The four strokes had no problem starting at -27 and the trails were bare (no traffic). Got to dress for it. Even my best snowmobile partner (wifey) has no complains at extreme cold riding.

Lake Tomahawk, WI January 2008

After looking at this picture, I can remember the morning well. It was 25 below when we woke up around 7:00 a.m. Two hours and two pots of coffee later, it had warmed to 15 below, so we suited up and rode.

Amazingly no frostbite suffered that day, but I did stop at Hallstrom's Ski Doo in Woodruff, WI and he gave me a "breather tube." This at least allowed my breath to escape outside of my helmet rather than freeze to my facemask.

Next trip I bought a heated shield for my modular helmet and never had this problem again.

To cold to ride

If your sled has a 12 volt eletircal system you can get Gerbings heated clothing and temperture no longer becomes a factor. They heat to 135 degrees. Makes it just like summer if you wish. It's the only way to go if you dislike cold temperture. You don't need to bring a lot of extra layers or have fancy outter gear. It's the only way to fly.

We set our limit now to -20° F. Getting old I guess. Never used to both us to ride in -30 or colder, but that extra 10° did a number on me last year. I could not warm up for about 4 hr after coming in kept shivering until I had a side ache. Full leathers, modular helmet, and full face mask under the modular. Then gauntlets on the handle bars, hand warmers on full.

Why do I get cold working outside, but not riding my sled? Ummmm???? Carharts are for work, Klim is for riding. Right gear for the right job. It's not rocket science.

cold doesn't bother me at all, i just suit up and ride!
i love riding when its sub zero due to the aforementioned performance that comes from carbed machines in super dry air lol

last year we were riding in Atikokan, Ontario with some family, and we woke up saturday morning to -47 F. and this isn't wind chill either, since there wasn't a slight breeze to be found. everything was perfectly still. it literally defined "dead of winter" lol
we just put on an extra layer, and trudged out to start up the sleds
took 5 to start the edge, and 7 for the indy, since it's battery was frozen haha

i think it ended up being a high of -30 that day, and we put in a 16 hour riding day. it was kinda cool tho at night because when you stopped, it'd sound like gunshots going off. it was so cold that the sap in the trees was freezing and causing cracking noises

Never Too cold

I have been riding my bike to work, 5 miles each way, all this month. Was below zero a couple days. Never had a problem, in fact I'm too hot most days. If you're too cold, your gear isn't very good.

Our house is in Tower MN, it was 60 below in 1996. That is the coldest non mountain temperature in the lower 48 states ever recorded. The truth is, if it’s real cold, 25 to 45 below, we stay off the lakes and rail road beds. I don’t care what you are wearing, when you are cruising along at 50-70 mph in a straight line, after 10 miles or so you’re cold.
