I had studs on my 121 Fusion. Loved them. Just have to be concious of their ability to tear things up (tar, concrete, decking, etc..). But for the trail, they can't be beat for traction. Now, I have a 144 with a 2 1/4 track.... no studs... and on the trail, if not icy, don't really need them.
This is my opinion on this,a track is like a set of tires on a car, some people take pride with how long they can go before they replace the tires, and the more tire spin the quicker it wares out.The same thing happens to a track. The cost of losing a cooler and a track from fatigue and ware is WAY cheaper then hitting a tree because you can't stop.
Poll probably needs to be updated to ask those who ride mostly trail- studs or not?
and mostly off trail- studs or not?
It looks like most of the long track guys w/ deep snow lugs aren't running studs. Which, is expected. If you ride powder most of the day, there is no need.
If you like to lake race you need them.
I tried studs, but don't need them now- they worked great on hard pack and ice only, but with decent snow cover and groomed trails with any loose snow all they do is rut it up, and off trail riding waste of $.
So for the 5% of the time I may have needed them not worth the abuse to the track with the extra weight and mass.
Where i ride, the trails are normally icy & hard pack. I also ride on rivers. I need studs for saftey. Now if I lived in the U.P., I would have 1.75 in lugs & no studs.
NEVER ran studs until my latest sled. i was a firm hater of the because i liked to slide corners. picked up a 07 mxz xrs last week with 196 studs on a 1.25 inch track with ten inch carbides! mand does that thing rip around the corners. but i dont like how aware you have to be when trying not to tear stuff up
