Trail #13 is at risk. Please spread the word!!

Our local snowmobile club has just issued a letter to all it's members. To make a long story short, we have gates on trail 13 from Greenland to Twin Lakes and side by sides and atvs are going around them and tearing the trail up. The landowners are not happy to say the least. Please spread the word as this is a beautiful trail and it takes pressure off of trail 3. We need all people to respect this land and it's barriers. There are plenty of places to ride without sacrificing our trails. Thank you!

Hopefully this can get resolved. Trail 13 is a really nice trail. Makes for a nice loop from Mass to Twinlakes. Take 3 going one way then 13 back. I will spread the word. Like all things it takes a few to ruin it for the majority!!

Private property does not equal public property....what is it that people just dont get? you're right hermie " takes a few to ruin it for the majority" Would really hate to see that loop lost, what about putting posts on atv sites like this? but from seeing some riders response to private property on this site, might as well talk to a brick wall. Again...riding is a privelage not a right and some people forget alot of these trails would not be possible without private land owners and they and their land need to be respected so not to ruin it for everyone else.

2 tings...one is signage...if people don't know the area and they get to the gate....is there a sign telling them the reroute or which direction to go....NO....so theres that....since none.....go around gate since don't know the way around legally....and more often than not....its the locals doing this....and the 4x4 trucks clubs do the most damage and leave the most trash and have the most disrespect....but NOONE comes down on them....why....because they come up to visit the locals and they all go together...I have seen that first hand...year after year....example....the 4x4 truck clubs try to be the 1st every year to break thru from skanee to bigbay....even if it means TEARING THE SNOWMOBILE trail to shreds....and bowling over trees to the tune of 100 per trip or more....and going around gates...whatever it takes...and then they stop on the trail...have lunch...and proceed to SHOVE all the trash outta the back of the pickups and atvs and sxs...even though there is PLENTY of room to take it all back PLUS SOME TOO...I been after em for years and then I found out they had cart blanche and the locals were with em anyhows....good luck....Romeoville truck club....FIBS

There is NO excuse for going around a closed gate, period! Why in the heck do they think they are there for?

I think some hidden spike strips are in order. I remember around 30 years or so ago when we were dirt bike riding around the calsag canal area in Illinois, someone threw down a few hundred roofing nails along the trail. I picked 1 up in both front & rear tires. needless to say, that was the last time I ever rode there.

Folks are going around a closed, locked gate?
The next thing you need is a set of carefully placed hi def trail cams!
Be sure that if anyone messes with any one of the cams, they'll be recorded on the other(s)!

Had a neighbor growing up that was a little off. Hated trespassers. Went and set bear traps on his property on the trails he had for only his use. Bunch of teenagers would ride their dirt bikes just to piss him off. One day a front tire found one of those lovely snapers and got flipped. Kid broke his leg, parents tried to sue. In court he said I have a trapping license. Judge says, not for bear. Reply I've got a terrible coyote problem and I forgot where that trap was, must have missed it. Judge if they hadn't gone around my gates, passed at least three no trespassing signs they never would have been in this situation. Judge agreed, to the day he died nobody trespassed there again.

As I said he was off, but they did respect his space.

It would be terrible to lose trail 13, it makes such a beautiful loop.

Thought about hi def cams too, atleast to pull registration numbers and send them a trespassing fine/ticket via mail just as they do at most major road intersections when signals aren't followed, or yes as another posted, tire strips, the land owner should be allowed to put these out and just make law enforcement, fire or DNR aware that they are there.

A Closed Gate IS YOUR SIGN. Turn around Einstein.

a closed gate is NOT A SIGN that says.....trail closed...private property....go back to trail # and trail# and take trail # east to # north and reconnect

one....I know....2 others don't know...I am one person....they are hundreds....so should there be a rerouting sign saying which way to go and not thru the gate....or just a gate.....we await your answer ENSTIENIUM.....as I said....ONCE AT THE SIGN....ALMOST ALL PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW OF A DIFFEReNT DIRECTION TO TAKE THAT IS ON AN OPEN TRAIL....can you read gary....it si you...as the trail sign guy....that wants your club trail not ruined.....its up to you to PROVIDE an alternate trail....at the gate...when it says...ROAD CLOSED...is there another sign saying DETOUR THIS WAY....whats so hard to freaking understand...if you do this...you will then be able to tell if its visitors or the locals....if it continues being used at a high rate....100% its the locals and not visitors....and I am not singling you out either gary....theres others with responses similar and it is for their benefit also...its not aboot getting mad at each other....its more about how to fix the thing and come up with a solution

Seriously - you are now going to debate a closed gate as NOT being a "STAY OUT" sign? Rediculous. The gate is closed for a reason, ENSTIENIUM. That is the lamest response ever.

It's the riders responsibility to know the correct route. If the riders find a gate the riders should know where to go. It's not my job to post a route around my property in the summer because I let the trail go thru in the winter (I'm not a property owner but if this happened the snow trail would be gone).

Took me 7 clicks to find the ATV map that does not have 13 on it.

Took me a whopping 5 to find the snowmobile trail and compare.

No way is it the landowners responsibility to provide an alternative route. I usually stay out of this BS but that is a ridiculous thing to say or think. The ATV/UTV riders should map out there route before they head out. And if they don't, they should pull their map out when they get to the closed sign and figure out there own route to where ever they are going.

Riders are the responsible ones. If there is a "Trail Closed" sign, it means just that. The rider/driver is the one that screwed up--------period! STAY ON THE TRAIL, "Road Closed" means just that,; turn around dummie and find a different way. No different in the winter for sleds.

Hmmmmm, me thinks there are some who don't know how to turn around.

Just because you ride it in the winter does not mean you can in the summer. We ask permission every fall to cross the neighbors land to access the Snowmobile trails. Now the trail crosses his property so does this automatically give me access to every inch of his land. No, no, no. We ask permission to have an access trail, or I can ride down the rode a mile to access the main trail. A gate is a gate. Turn around and figure out what you did wrong. That's what a map is for.

It is too bad that this keeps happening. It can be the death of many good winter trails.
I'm guessing that many of the riders are heading out without a map in hand. I'm sure that many do not know where to go when the trail is gated. How do you fix the problem? Education is important for sure. Getting the information to riders is a challenge. The best solution is not easy.
I live close to a road that has been closed most of the summer. The road is clearly marked ahead of the closed section. It is not enough. It is amazing how many people turn around in front of the house every day. Even saw a tour bus trying to make a U turn. I see many of them get out of their vehicles and walk past the barriers to the closed section of road. I assume that they are checking to see if the road really is closed. The road is gone. It is a big hole filled with water, so not an option for street vehicles. It would not be easy to stop and ATV rider when there is a trail that appears to be ahead of the barrier.
