UP trail 160

Has anyone taken this loop and if so is it worth it. Trying to decide if it's worth it to load up the sleds on the trailer and take off from White Thunder riders parking lot on 51 to do this loop or say the heck with it and just ride from the house and go elsewhere. Thanks

Been awhile since I’ve ridden it, but it is very tight twisty for a portion of it and hard to maintain as it’s a long run for the groomer. I know in years past it’s often rough, and usually thin by the lake, but that’s not to say it’s not currently in great shape at the moment. Just giving past knowledge about the trail.

Thank you Indy I am trying to find trail info conditions but it's hard GRTA doesn't seem very good at updating anything.

The president of the club, also the guy in charge of the GRTA FB page, I believe his wife has a bunch of health problems and hasn’t been posting as much this year because he doesn’t have the time (Jan 17 post). Steve Hamilton used to be in charge and they were extremely active on social media back then, but now he’s with north country.

I’m assuming you’re just looking to try something new? Have you ever ridden Bayfield county? I know it’s a bit of a drive for you, but it’s a very cool experience with very different terrain from Oneida/Vilas/Iron and the western UP. Much lower traffic typically too.

I have ridden Bayfield but it has been a while like a long while. Before we had a house up here I use to ride different areas all the time.

Hermie, wife and I rode it last year and it was a nice ride. From Cisco lake through Saxon harbor back through Hurley back was about 170 miles if I remember correctly. Snow was thin near lake but rideable, and that was last year when snow wasn’t nearly as good as this year. Only problem I see would be if it’s been groomed lately because it’s a long way to get into if it’s hasn’t been groomed lately.

It's a very scenic and twisty trail! It's a long one though. I think 50-60 miles starting and stopping in Hurley.
2 spots are worth stopping for. The bald mountain overlook/teepee up there. The pic of my boy was on St. Patty's day 3 years ago. He loved it and wanted to stay longer!
The other scenic spot is the Montreal River overlook. Just south of 505 by a couple miles. You can see it noted on Polaris ride command app.

don't miss 100 ft. superior falls. Montreal river at the lakefront, keep your eyes open for the parking lot, it's easy to miss.

Well we ended up taking 15 to Boulder to 6 Presque Isle. Took 1 to to 2 which was in excellent shape. Took 2 to 160. Took 160 to the overlook. It was pretty rough along most of GRTA trails. I don't think 160 has been groomed in some time. We ran into another couple at the overlook and he highly suggested we turn around. I guess in town it was all mud and asphalt and the trail leading into town had 3' rollers. So we ended up going back the way we came in didn't complete the loop so didn't see the overlook of the river that is pretty nice view. Took 17 back to the new airport trail and worked are back to St Germain from there. We may try it again if they get more snow and it gets groomed. I am wondering if GRTA equipment is down along with Sayner. Doesn't seem like any of Sayner trails have been groomed all week. Only a small section and I am thinking that perhaps Boboens groomed that section as it connects to 2 of there trails. PXL_20260211_202443670.jpg PXL_20260212_014601497.jpg
