Sad, but probably true. my wife has worked at the USPS for 22 years and the last 2 years we have seen things going on internally we thought we would never see.

It's a Dinosaur. Just like the Railroads. Provided many, many years of generous retirements and so did GM. Times have changed they need to reinvent themselves. So how are the bills going to make it to my house? email? with faxes (almost obsolete) Email, texting and UPS along with FedX, I think we will servive. Anyone in here recall sitting down and actually writing a letter? Been awhile. Losing jobs is never good, but times are a changing.

One difference is that delivering the mail is a power of the federal government per the Constitution. I suppose it can be done weekly and it doesn't have to be delivered all the way to everyone's doorstep, and that it can be subcontracted to Fedex, etc.

Snail mail is a dinosaur! It's not effective and is a huge drain on our government. I hate to see anybody lose their job, but we've GOT to start creating some efficiency some where!

What about my "forever" stamps, LOL
"Forever stamps" — maybe we should have seen that for what it was: the handwriting on the wall. A hint of the coming death knell for the USPS. "You didn't think you'd really get a chance to use them forever, didja?" :)

Snail mail is still a very important part of our society. There are many people in this country who do not own computers, mainly the elderly. How are they supposed to get their bills and such without the postal system? How can our government go so far astray as to let this happen? Just exactly where are our tax dollars going? We managed to save the auto industry, and the banking (crooks) industry- why not this one? Do we really trust the internet enough to let it completely replace our mailing system?

Mail delivery cant just dissappear. Stamps are still relied upon and may never go away. It has slowed down and the USPS needs to adapt. But no one (ok maybe a select few cause they have no bank account ) is so dependant on a 6 day a week delivery to miss a few days a week. Junkie mail is keeping the trucks and carriers on the road. Direct deposits and direct pay is now the rule and does not require a PC.

3 or 4 day delivery a week would work unless your in the USPSULCA.

And I'm keepin' my 3 cent War Stamp forever

That's a very broad statement regarding railroads, and inaccurate. I take it you don't own any stock in BNSF. Personally I'll side with Warren Buffet on this one...

And you think my statement will bring down your stock value? If I wasn't right then you wouldn't be so insecure about my statement. Correct? Give us a better comparision, I am open for that.

The forever stamp reminds me of the term, "life time warranty". who's lifetime?

My stock?? I wish I had some BNSF stock in the vault, but I don't. I was simply alluding to where the smart money has gravitated in recent years.

A lot of baseless stuff gets tossed out on the internet. If you look at all the snowmobile grades in the UP, sure RRs would strike you as a business that is done. I was simply pointing out that the major RRs of today, such as BNSF, have never been stronger. Consider the volume of tractor trailers and ocean containers that move between Chicago and LA by rail each year. It makes the economy possible and is hardly a dinosaur.

Yes the post office has a much tougher model and is in real jeopardy, I can't argue against that but when you throw the extra fluff into your arguement I have to discount your other arguements.

Honestly the USPS could still make it, but they need to make radical changes which I know their union would never go for, and why the service will ultimetely fail. They need to majorly consolidate like Fedex and UPS does where it's Hub and a few spokes per geological region, not have a hub and a spoke in every single city. That's where they have the biggest downfall. Keep all the drop boxes they have all over, and maybe keep a few smaller staffed locations (kinda like a kinkos or a ups store but without the trucks stationed there), and they may make it through this.

It's just another political scare B.S. Just like the one a few weeks ago.

It's the only way this goverment knows how to function.
Send out some Scares to the public, only then get to work to figure a problem out.

USPS needs to make some changes and adjust to the times that's all. My pile of mail each day is as big as ever.

X2, I can see a post office from my front yard. (2 blocks) yet they drive their little jeep around the neighborhood. The younger (new) guy walks the route. They act like the are doing you a favor to open another window when busy. The only place I can think of with worse service is at the Secretary of state office (DMV).
