I just looked at the modis image from today and holy woah that ice went from blue and watery to white and solid in just the last couple of days. But I suppose with nights at -20 it was bound to happen.

today marks the last time lake Michigan was frozen over since 79. also happened in 76. them must have been some real cold winters because as brutally cold as this winter has been lake Michigan is barely 50% covered in ice.

Did the big storm open up the big lake? I'm going to be there next week Thursday -Sunday. I'm not so worried about the lake effect snow, I just want the temps to warm up a little bit coming over the open water.

Last weekend couldnt see open water on lake Michigan from shore. Today I could see open water and waves breaking within a mile or 2 from shore.

The northern 1/3rd of Superior opened up, as did things from the tip of the Keweenaw east around 50 miles and south to Munising. Also the south end of the lake extending out around 30 miles. Lots more wind (not as strong as yesterday and today) in the coming days, so it should continue to open up. We did have some LES off and on today.

Lake MI is just about 100% open and about 50% of Huron opened up. Pretty incredible. Even the west end of Erie opened up!
