You know John with the lake freezing over, it will give you a break in snow removal....

Yes, very true. The silver lining I guess, but it will also make more work for me to load the wood boiler more and cause me to run out of wood sooner, which will cause more work by having to cut up the extra load I have on order.

Either way it means work, but I guess if I had to pick, I would pick to move snow!

PS. Maybe a winter wood cutting party Mark and Steve? Bring the sleds!

Cool!, I am thinking I will not be able to wait until I get back from my western trip the first week of March, so sometime the second half of Feb. We have room to put you and Mark (or another) up at the house too.

Hopefully the winds associated with this now Blizzard Warning are helping mix things up a bit. Must be some open water somewhere, been snowing at a moderate clip the last few hours.

Edit: A couple 50+ MPH wind gusts have been recorded up in Keweenaw Co. this evening.

50 + MPH should keep the Big Lake mixed up??

I'll have to wait for the sun to be up for a while and hopefully get a reasonably good look at the lake from space (via satellite of course!), but all signs right now point to some meaningful mixing/melting late yesterday and last night. Our temps this morning are around 5-10 degrees warmer than what was expected, but yet temps are still -20 to -30 on the other side of the lake, so the lake is significantly moderating the air temps and we did have a considerable amount of new snow (4-6") overnight.

So too early to say for sure what happened, but I suspect a meaningful amount of ice was lost and the forecast for more winds (perhaps not 50 mph) looks good for the next 4-5 days.

So the winds seem to have busted up around 40% of the pack ice on the western lake last night. Below is the latest ice estimate: Note, I used the opposite method to show where ice is, as compared to the previous outline. I think if you look at the image, you will see the blue water on the north shore and be able to tell how I outlined this time. Sorry for any confusion.

Forecast is for some OK winds the next several days. I like the WSW winds for tonight and tomorrow and the warmer temps (although brief) for the second half of tomorrow as well. Some even stronger winds possible later Sat into Sunday. So there is still some hope we can salvage this mess, but lots of cold from Sat-Tue. So it will be a battle!

Twin Lakes-Was extremely windy all night -tho I don't like the winds- sure hope it did the job. Sure would not like Skylar turning into GRUMPY GILLS. However, if the winds don't do the job, the Twin Lakes Crazies have retired until Dec. 1, 2014. John, you might have to consider having everyone at your Make-A-Wish banquet do the "Melt the Ice" Dance. And of course, a picture will be needed.
