Vilas County

What is it going to take snow wise to open the trails from now... I know all the clubs are working hard with what they can. Just wondering it is going to take a foot or two feet. I would think with the cold and what I think is there 6" would ge thing open... But what I think is there might be off...
if the ground is bare you're gonna need a min of 12 inches for rideable trails. Not saying the clubs won't open as they are under tremendous pressure to get these trails open being 2nd week of Jan. and after last year.
6 inches of snow on the trail wouldn't handle two sleds in the corners before it'd be down to dirt.

Agree, hoping they get 3-5” out of this clipper on Sunday so they can get out and roll it. Then one more clipper and they’re in business to at least open but would likely be poor. No one can do as much with little snow as Vilas clubs.

The clubs panned the trails after the wet snow that we got in December. It froze, then it thawed, then it rained, then it froze very hard again. There is a 3” hard base now on the trails. Just reporting the facts, 6” on top of that and imaginations run wild. Again, if Vilas opens the entire county must open, not just certain areas. FYI, Rhinelander weatherman is just saying measurable precipitation for Sunday, nothing more, nothing less at this point.

Paul has nailed it. Some trails actually have a solid frozen base. Probably more than not so that should help a lot. That's the positive the negative is there were also some areas that are bare ground. I can't speak for where Paul is at but through the town of Eagle was completely bare. I am guessing most trails that are in open areas lost most of the base. The other positive that I am seeing for the 1st time in a long time climate prediction center is showing above average precipitation through the whole upper Midwest. Here to hoping that maybe the whole state can get some rideable snow. The sport can really use it

That solid base of ice usually means when you put snow on top of that there will be a lot of missed corners or people sliding off the trail on corners. Could get dangerous in the busy towns.

Yes very true. I know the trails I saw in the woods were still actually snow. Unfortunately we will have to take the hand we are dealt and make the best of it. At this point I would be happy just to be able to actually get geared up in my house and jump on the sled instead of gearing up on the tailgate of my truck.

I drove through Vilas county this morning. Looked like some grooming had been done on the north end of the county. I assume some of yesterdays lake effect made it down that way. Throw in the clipper coming tonight hopefully the season can start.

They just bumped up the snow forecast a little more for tonight, so we will see what happens. Little fresh dusting this morning.

About 3” of new fresh here in MW. Skeeters rolled the trails this afternoon so with cold weather they should set up nice. It almost appears that something might give here? Businesses getting nervous, I would say if got another 3-4” they might consider opening. It’s definitely cold enough.

And it just keeps snowing...add another inch...puts us over 5 as well, and currently snowing sideways...temp dropping and very windy...our club also went out tonight to pack trails...this will be a nice base...just need some more...plenty of ice on the lakes here

We ended up with 4” of new snow in Manitowish Waters. Was in town today and saw the groomer filling up so they are burning some diesel fuel. Looks a little more like it should up here now, I heard that they are looking for another 3-4” and it might open, for now still closed as of today, 1/13. A few pics of the trail from the road.

Sounds good Ken, yes, we need to get into a favorable jet stream pattern and get some storms coming our way.

staring to look good finally

tracks must be from the trail boss checking things out??
Hope so, did not see them on the way into town but noticed them 2 hours later on the way back. There are still people up here that don’t heed the what’s open and closed.

It’s funny, my old club in southern Wisconsin would have opened with the snow we have. I think Vilas will open pretty soon, just my opinion, but, it won’t be pretty out there until we get a couple of nice storms with heavy snowfall.

Idk Paul info about opening Vilas is tight now not saying anything. Maybe they are waiting to get closer to the weekend to capitalize on MLK weekend. Trails won’t hold up to traffic that’s for sure. In my 16 years of living in Vilas once open Vilas never shut down trails until end of season too much red tape to start and stop. Whatever happens hopefully good for business.
