Pretty clear that I said the Vilas trails are closed and wont reopen. They are closed so stay off of them! REASON is the clubs insurance has lapsed ! we have 100's of lakes and swamps to ride without touching a trail anyways! lots of ice fishing left and beaver trapping ! I reasearch the law and cannot afford a ticket with my Wisconsin Guide License and livelyhood.

I thought their insurance went until March 31?

Looks like no late season ride this year.
Haven't been on my sleds since early Feb.
This season was a total BUSTER - worst ever for me, dating back to 1993.

were do you get off calling me a !@#hole RADSRH?

i own land right up there and if you actual read my post i didn't say to ride closed trails.. you don't seem to know much about the legality of where and when you can ride .. some of the trails are actually public land/ fireroads that can be used regardless of club trails being closed. most of the gates that are locked are for the portion of the trails that cross private land.. it is perfectly legal to ride these fire roads.. if you were as informed as you think you are you would know that .. i can ride from conover all the way to boulder junction in the "up" legally.. I don't think as a senoir member you should be on here ripping, or swearing at people the way you are.. and i for one certainly don't tolerate crap like that from anyone.. you want to play that game i'll be more then happy to give you my address up there and gladly meet you to "talk " this over.. I promise you won't be happy with the results if you care to say that crap to my face

I also live here and was out yesterday in the truck, and guess what people where out on closed trails crossing private property riding because they thought they had a right to do so. What I am saying is people read posts that say there is no law that says you can't ride on closed trails and others that say they can ride from here to there and they think they can jump out there and do the same regardless of public or private land. I also own land in the UP and had a trail running through it, notice I said had a trail running through it. After 6 years of people stealing signs and riding around gates year round and this last fall thinking they had the RIGHT to tear my gates down so they could ride on my land I have had enogh and it is now closed for good. Last spring at frost out someone thought it would be a good idea to take there nice big 4x4 down the trail/my access road with the truck up to the frame in mud, do you think they came back to fix the trail/my road after they f**ked it all up? Nope still have 2 big ditches running down my road that I have to take care of so I can make it back to my camp that I paid for and pay taxes on every year. With thousands of people reading the posts on here I think some people should be more clear before posting things like there is no law that says you can't do this or can do that, because even with out planting seeds in peoples heads there are ENOUGH arse holes out there that think they can do what ever they want too and it is costing all of us that follow the law a sport we all love

SB264 was signed by both houses & signed into law on May 10, 2010, creating 2009 WISCONSIN ACT 252. The effective date was May 22, 2010. 23.119 (c) (2) reads: no person may operate an off-highway vehicle on private property without the consent of the owner. (c) (3) reads: No person may operate an off-highway vehicle on public property that is posted as closed to the operation of off-highway vehicles or on which the operation of an off-0highway vehicle is prohibited by law. 350.10 (1) (f) reads: On the private property of another without the consent of the owner or lessee. Failure to post private property does not imply consent for snowmobile use.

In our county there is a posting in the paper when the trails open/close.

I don't think that every snowmobiler that rides the trails also reads this board. A lot of them probably have no idea what the laws are either. They see that the trail has snow, so they ride. It doesn't help when they say they are open till the end of March, then the next year they close at the beginning of March.
No one knows whats open and whats not! You have some gates up, but the hundred miles they rode before they got to the gate was open.
That is the confusing part.
It's to bad you had to close the trail down because of the few jerk wads!

I don't feel too bad about the trail, there is going to be a reroute next year and it was do to bad snow conditions for the current trail. I was going to close it this year but was asked to give it one more year and we did. What pisses me off more then anyone will ever know is the people out there that will go around gates, tear down blocks around the outside of the gates, and this fall when there was no snow to speak of and the gates where closed and locked TEAR DOWN THE GATES JUST TO GO THROUGH MY LAND! It is posted and the signs have been destroyed, and taken. Its not just one person and its not everybody that does this but the group of people that think it is there right to go where ever when ever they want and destroy other peoples propery are and will take the sport away forever.

Radsrh , ifyou have gone thru that much crap with sledders i don't blame you for your attitude. i'd have it to. And i'd close my land off if that was happening.

And 90s about that law , what gets lost and most people don't know and i didn't probably state clearly enuff. Is that there are many public fire roads and logging rd's that are not posted as no tress passing in my area and also mostly we ride 3 season roads that are not plowed in the winter and if you know where you are going you can ride them legally till the end of march regardless of the trails being closed. And go all over northern Vilas county and into the "UP" . I actually was shown and taught most of the routes by a former member and citizen from up in conover. As far as people disregarding gates or riding posted closed trails, i agree 100% that should not happen..

Prime example is Walts fire lane West of buckatoben rd.. That is a fire road and county unplowed but maintained road. Totally legal to ride. but 300 feet east is gated because it is private and not part of the road system. From that area west you can head north and back up around lake laura or stormy lake and over and ride all county unplowed 3 season roads.. And some logging roads that run thru open county and state public lands..These are the same roads a lot of the locals also run to get to there property's in the winter with 4 wheelers or trucks if the snow isn't to deep. There is a trail boss right down from me and we have ridden together a few times and if any one would know it would be him.
I do agree its confusing to many and vila does not do a good job as a whole.. People that know better shouldn't pull this crap they do and should be fined.. if you really don't know better you should be at least have some respect and not destroy, knock over or mess with someones property.

walts fire lane is also state trail 8, and club trail 12. all the same trail/road you also get a problem with the county calling the trails closed. but the state not calling them closed and the clubs also have a say.. 3 diff groups calling the shots on really 3 different trails all in one.. this is a problem all over up there. And as a unplowed 3 season road , perfectly legal to ride..

I ride ATV's in the summer as well and we unloaded in bergland and rode the pioneer trail to rockland, all the gates were closed and the trail goes right around them. This is whats confusing, my brain says not to proceed yet everyone says thats the trail go around them. I can see how things get jumbled up, I also got talked to by the DNR this year for riding down a power line to get to our lakes boat landing. we are the last cabin from the boat landing and its about a half mile to the boat landing so we ride down the power line to jump on the lake. The DNR said its state land and asked it we could ride down the road since its a legal access trail/road. I said yes but I thought if would be safer for everyone if I just rode down the power line. He just asked me to follow the rules even if they don't make sense sometimes. I will always try to do what right and fair, sometimes I make mistakes as well as others, so lets work together and make sure this sport and others can continue to be a family event.

ftadaddy,
I believe the gates are closed to try to enforce the 50 in. width limit on the Pioneer trail. There's only gates until you get over to Norwich Rd. then there's no more gates after that, can't remember forsure but there might be 1 where the trail turns off of Victoria Rd. also.

If it is the same set up as trail 3 then the gates will be closed and yes you do go around those, there will be a 3rd post off of the gate support post that is set at 50" this is to enforce the max with atv/utv allowed on the trail. If you don't fit between the 2 posts then you are too wide to be on the trail, the gates that I am talking about are on a snowmobile only trail are clearly marked with no wheeled use and no tresspassing signs and have had stacks of logs on both sides of the gates. The signs have been stolen or driven over, the log stacks torn apart and thrown around and this fall the gates torn right off of the posts.

As for riding the power lines and this is going to open a can of worms ;) it is not legle, it might be if they run through state land but if they run through private land the right of way is only for the lines and to allow the company to maintain them not for people to drive through. So winter or summer if the power lines cross private land you are tresspassing without the land owners permission

According to the DNR it is not legal to ride the power lines, I know its much safer to ride two blocks down to the boat landing and now I know its wrong. I just don't see the sense in driving down the side of a busy road versus a power line. My son is 12 and just got his safety permit, I don't want him to break the law but I would rather have him safe than dead.

as far as the gates I believe you have to go around 2-3 from bergland to rockland and I understand the 50 inch limet but again those trails can handle larger UTVs no problem. I ride dirt bikes so I could care less but these trails should be open to anyone who wants to ride and spend money
