Mich has so many stop signs that everybody is starting to boondock up there! More signs than WI. DELLS. Real boring riding on MI. railbeds. stop-go-stop-go,stop-go,stop-go,sto-go. gotta blow one once in awhile just to stay awake! i think they had to go to $35 bucks to pay for all the stop signs! lol

Yes I was joking. This site has seemed to be going down hill very fast this year. Everyone wants to preach and be the trail police, the moral police, or whatever. They must always remind others they are riding too fast or doing this or that! They almost got killed their last trip and it goes on and on. Its a shame because the site has changed...and not for the better. But this seems to happen to every good site once the membership goes up.

Funny, the wife and I have been on this site for a long time. Probably since it started, and we were just talking about the same thing. The site has changed. And not for the better! That sucks. There used to be some interesting reads on here. Now it is full of do-gooders and their preaching. Maybe John will put a stop to it? That would be nice. I really don't like change. Especially when it is not for the better!

I heard the same...

I was up there last week (3-7) as well and the guys I ride with mentioned how the DNR keeps a close eye on the stop sign there on Aspen Ln. We did not see them at all during our trip, but believe-you-me, our group made sure we stopped.

thebluff: We stayed upstairs in Rockland last week and it was great! The sauna was fantastic. I saw your thread asking for some aged cheese but being from IN, I have never seen cheese that old and had no idea where to stop and get it on the way up. Did anyone follow through and bring you some?

Hey rp7x, where do you pick up this old trail when heading toward Rockland from Mass?

Lots of comments from trail riders but here it one from a motorist who driving on roads with a trail crossing and has encountered too many sledders who take risks at road crossings, like not wanting to wait for the vehicles to pass and will shoot across when an approaching vehicle is very close and this is on a heavily traveled state highway. What astonishes me is I notice that many have sledders following them and it appears they have no concern that the sledders following them will see the vehicle and stop or just think because they made it, there is no danger in crossing. I have seen sleds who thought so and had to make a panic stop. I guess some don't think about that when the cross in front of traffic or roll thru intersections.

Just recently on a Sunday afternoon I had a sled roll thru a street crossing right in front of me. Lucky I knew the crossing was there. As I approach a sledder is coming up to the crossing, see's me coming but he cross's anyway, I am about 200-300 ft away coming at 25pmh. Yet apparently he does not think about his fellow riders who follow him. The 2nd machine comes out into the road and I notice the driver looking the other direction first then when he/she looks in my direction to see the grill of my truck stopped about 50 ft away. Any other motorist who would not be aware of this crossing would likely have been traveling faster. I have traveled this before and I know many roll thru this crossing so I am on my toes. Don't want to be the one to hit or be hit.

I wonder if they have been getting complaints about this and that's they are on the lookout.

So what was the problem? 200-300 feet was plenty of room to cross! The second rider did the right thing too, looked both ways and stopped. Sorry if I sound sarcastic. Maybe if you started you sermon with a hymn I would of responded with a A-men!

I dont think you read the post 600. He said the 2nd sled looked at him as HE was stopped 50 ft away not that the sled stopped. Anyway you missed the point. If we want to lose the sport then keep your attitude. We are guests of the UP or where ever we ride, and it is not our private little playground where we can tresspass, ride recklessly, ignore traffic signs and be stupid. If yuo run a stop sign you are wrong. I admit to rolling a stop sign or 2 but if I was to get caught then I deserve the ticket.

We were stoped at the same spot a few weeks ago. I stop and looked both ways. but when I took off i noticed the truck sitting way back with its lights off and was to late to stop the group. One out of seven did not stop and the whole group was stoped at the hwy. One $135 ticket. Just 2 miles from the cabin.

Greenland area-rolling stops

I don't know if it was mentioned earlier but a snowmobiler was killed in that area several weeks ago - was hit by another sled and that's probably why the police were out.
Nobody's perfect but have seen more knuckle-draggers than usual lately running thru stop signs. When crossing a highway a rolling stop is not good enough. Especially in a group of riders it is a problem because the "followers" don't stop and they don't always look and they get hit. It happened in an ATV group that I was with once - a follower was hit by a semi and he was thrown quite a ways (internal injuries, rib - femur fractures) but luckily survived. Stopping completely is more a benefit to your friends following you than to yourself. If you stop, your friends will stop and take a look before crossing.

Rolling stops easy money for the DNR. Stop signs on roads that are used don't bother me but it seems like there are a lot of signs in places where there is no winter traffic. I, know, stop means stop but on some of these a yield sign or a driveway ahead sign would work just fine.

I can honestly say this Thread made my group this last weekend stop every where we went, I made sure of it. Trail 3 between twin lakes and south range had a sneaky DNR truck sitting hidden up a road out of our site, Very good thing we all stopped or there would have been 5 tickets. I really stressed to the guys in my group to stop every where. In all this weekend I had seen 3 DNR out and about up in the twin lakes area to houghton area

Good to see the post did some good, saving a few $$ and keeping folks a bit safer in the process. Think Snow!
