Web cam security for second home

Does anyone have a webcam security system for your cabin or second home? I was thinking about getting something for the cabin using Dish Networks wild blue internet.

I'd like to be able to look at the place by just jumping online. It would be nice to have a snow gauge too. What's all involved with getting something set up like this?

It is not that expensive. Smurfrider has one on his place. He is currently riding in Colorado. best to email him and he will explain how much and how it works.

Interesting idea. You'd have to light the place up at night though wouldn't ya? What about some strategically, high-in-the-air mounted trail cams along with it?

You are talking about a real time live cam feed 24/7 using Wild Blue right? Or do you want timed pictures? Different animals & cost.

I do not think a live camera set up is that expensive. I have a customer that has one and uses it to keep an eye on his employees at his restaurant HE goes to a web site and monitors 3 cameras he can even do it from his phone. I think he told me it cost like $300 i can ask next time i see him if you would like.

That ipwould be ideal. Any info would be great.

I use the X-10 system http://www.x10.com/homepage.htm and also have Wild Blue Internet. I have 4 cameras and a variety of light switches linked to it. You need to have a cheap PC on sight to host the software and then link your home PC to the cabin via "PC anywhere" type access that allows you to pull up the desktop at the cabin. Wild Blue is slow so don't expect fast connections but I can move the cameras and get decent idea of what is happening. I had a weatherstation in the yard and it sent data to the cabin PC and I could see what was happening on the weather. A storm took it out and I have not replaced it. I put a large stick in the ground with marks to see how much snow is on the ground. I can turn on the lights and adjust the thermostat so it is warm when I arrive. The downside is the power supply. I get frequent power loss and so you need to have a way to remote reboot your PC. I can do this but I have no idea how my computer guy set it up. Hope this helps.

With an internet connection, computor and webcam you can view what is happening at your cabin by logging on to it with pc anywhere or any other software that lets you remotely control the cabin computor. As greggk stated the connection can be slow and the picture a little grainy but it will work fine. If you want other people to see pics from the webcam than you will need a website to ftp upload them too. If you are looking at live stream feed than it does start to get a little more complicated and pricey. I am currently looking at micasaverde which does not need a computor just an internet connection. It looks to be very user friendly and can perform a number of other tasks like remotely turning up the heat and turning on lights etc. Its all fun stuff so just play around with it and you will find something that works fine for you!

What does a 4 camera or so set up cost? I have a cabled cottage so the Internet is good. Can this type of set up also allow it to be viewed as one of JD's cams?

Polarice - See if you can get DSL. I know the midway has it. You should be close enough. If you have an internet connection, your options are limitless. I have installed many of these systems for businesses and cabins.
Go over your requirements (what functionality you want) and I can steer you in the right direction.

I have a bunch of x10 stuff a widow friend wanted me to sell on ebay. Let me know if you want me to dig through it for something in particular

There's a lot of really great info. Thanks for all of the input. I'll have to figure out what the best plan of attack would be. Thanks again.

No phone lines. He told me that they had to run power under the road and when they did, they did not run phone lines. It would be 4k to get a phone line. I think he is going with the dish internet option and a security system dvr type of deal that can send info based on alerts and record to a local (hidden) dvr.
