Sad to say but the only Harleys likely to get a ticket is them 2 in that other post.....Lol.

SLP makes a nice quiet silencer that meets the J2567 standards and drops 10 lbs.
No one even notices the diff. as proofed when a WI DNR waved us through at a reg. spot check in Flo. Co.

Got to wonder how many of the ticket writing hypocrites have loud bikes themselves.

Glad to hear of some enforcement. Our sport could be legislated out of existence in the blink of an eye and if it happens it will be due to NOISE and TRESSPASSING. And by the way, Harley and any other bikers with loud pipes, it could happen to motorcycling too. Both activities very small and non-essential in the eyes of government.
They already have been cracking down on Harley's for this for years, just like snowmobiling. Just last summer the Pepin county WI sheriff followed us for 10 miles right on our tail (less than a car length). Then proceeded to pull me over. He did not right a ticket but checked for the baffles, all was legal. My bike does have a real throaty base sound, but when at lower RPM relatively quiet. I am not sure, but others have said they have now equipped squad cars with built in Bb equipment. That may be why he followed so close.

There are many aftermarket cans out there like you said that lower weight and sound almost stock. I have a can on my 1200 have been through many checkpoints and never had a problem. Mine shaved 13lbs off and had a nice deep throaty sound to it.

One good thing about the trails being closed down here all winter, peaceful sleeping at night.
As for the HDs and HD wannabes with the obnoxious exhausts, especially the ones that relentlessly blip their throttles as they take forever to back their Road Colossus Glide into a parking spot, I might suggest a backup alarm instead. ;)

Worst thing is the guys that bust out their old triples with stingers once a year when it snows around here. Wearing their old school leather gear, they act just like the HD Dopes when the leave the gas station or bar. Noise never bothered me, now we have a baby and a neighbor with a clapped out old diesel with no mufflers that likes to go by wide open at night. Now I understand what it's all about.

A lot of towns are now passing compression brake ordinances for the big rigs also. Once again, legislators thinking backwards. I personally think it is ridiculous making a device put on equipment for safety being deemed illegal within city limits, when the real problem is faulty equipment. Every single compression brake noise issue is attributed to un-baffled exhaust or straight pipes. ALL these problems could be fixed, (whether it be a snowmobile, motorcycle, big rig, or anything else for that matter) if they were put out of service, impounded, fined and not released out of impound until the problem is repaired to industry standards. Problem would soon be resolved !!!

no doubt about it...DNR was definitely makin' some revenue. Seen the groups waiting at the park with officer Opie when I went by with the groomer. As I was turning around at Antonio's to go back 5 sleds left the Mobil heading north along 64. I love this sport as well as anybody, but if ya can't be respectful and follow the rules, don't look for any sympathy from me. I personally, have called the Ontonagon County DNR office complaining about noise #1, and not staying on the trail (more precisely, riding on private property), #2. On the Michigan DNR website it says: each snowmobile manufactured after July 1, 1980 and sold or offered for sale in the state of Michigan shall be equipped with a muffler, not to exceed 88 decibels as measured using the 2004 society of automotive engineers standard J2567. It also states that any snowmobile manufactured after July 1, 1977 shall be equipped with a muffler that does not exceed 78 decibels of sound pressure at 50 feet as measured by the 1974 SAEJ-192a. Pretty sure that means if I can hear your sled being navigated around the Mobil station a half mile away, I have a problem with you interrupting the serenity of the northwoods. It also surprises me that we, as snowmobilers, have any trail system at all, with all the off-trail tracks I see in the woods. There would be no possible way for a snowmobiler to know if they are on private property or where the exact boundaries to the Ottawa National Forest are (unless you are going to hire a surveyor to go with you)....and then there are railroad right-of-ways....it goes on and on. If you are registered, quiet, respectful, and STAY ON THE TRAIL, you probably will be very welcome here. If not...STAY HOME !!!

Thanks for understanding Allpolaris. People have been riding the highways all year around Bergland, I have stopped people and explained to them they can't ride the highways and all you get is an attitude. If I could write tickets I would. Same goes for the loud pipes, they run the access trail into Bergland right next to houses late at night where locals are sleeping Brappppping all the way. Then the next thing you see on the internet is people complaining about the DNR wanting revenue. Give me a ticket book, I'd be glad to hand out tickets.

Maybe your hearing wouldn't be bad if you had stock pipes on the hog eh?

I was waiting for this to come up on here. Seems there is a double standard for noise acceptance of snowmobiles vs. motorcycles. Snowmobile groups are not even in the same league as H.O.G. when it comes to government lobby groups.

Been riding in the UP for 20 years with a can. Been pulled over many times including last weekend. Never ever been questioned about exhaust. But Im not an idiot the about the way I ride with a can either. Stop signs and trail permits are all they have ever cared about and all my encounters with Sheriff or DNR in the UP has been completely pleasant.

Loud harleys dont cause roads to be closed.

Roads aren't private property

I hear Ya. I live right on a corner, just out of the city where they all like to go for a ride in the country. They like to come around the corner and just nail it.
Thank God for air conditioning.

I agree that loud pipes are a problem and it wouldn't bother me if everything but a stock exhaust were outlawed. That being said, there is no doubt that Ontonagon county is a revenue machine.

Flat out saying that you cannot alter a part on your snowmobile doesn't hold water in court.
Especially when there are db standards that set the standard and ONLY need to be adhered to.
It was a bad idea that became a bad law and needed to be proven as bad law.
Legislators are idiots that at times know nothing about what they are trying to regulate.
There are a lot of bad laws that need to proven but that costs money and that is the only reason the enforcers get away with it.
The aftermarkets have heard the sledders wants loud and clear....give me a silencer that sheds weight and stays un noticable.
To punish all ppl with an altered exhaust because of some yahoos with an illegal obnoxious silencer is flat out lazy.

I wish they would do a better job of enforcing non-OEM pipes (loud). I would support a law that called for the sled(s) to be impounded and a hefty fine.

It seems many (NOT ALL) of the sleds with loud pipes are off trail guys..the same guys who carry backpacks with shovels around northern WI..Like *** do you need a backpack and shovel for in Eagle River?! The same guys who shoot onto the trail in front of people on the railroad bed..

Usually IL people too..lol..because those of us living in WI and MI understand the importance of the trails systems and are not ignorant enough to run a loud pipe/can.

I call BS to the blaming of the off trail guys. Every obnoxious loud sled I ever hear are trail sleds of the puke green color. The "T"cat crowd with little willy syndrome.

You guys don't think rice burner bikes don't make noise? Guess you don't get out much. We got a Chinese gang over here who like to wake you up before they do their drive by. Us Harley guys just don't want to die at the hands of a texting soccer mom doing her makeup while swatting at kids in the back seat and not spilling her latte. She don't see us.
