Western UP DNR Checking loud pipes on sleds?

You guys don't think rice burner bikes don't make noise? Guess you don't get out much. We got a Chinese gang over here who like to wake you up before they do their drive by. Us Harley guys just don't want to die at the hands of a texting soccer mom doing her makeup while swatting at kids in the back seat and not spilling her latte. She don't see us.

The loud exhaust so people can hear us coming is a poor excuse though. I sure as heck can't here a Harley coming down the road from inside my truck! No noise until it passes you.

Read the MI DNR reports.
Lots of group patrols and stops/checks. Amazing the no reg or trail stickers and dumb dumbs with warrants .
But more warnings then tickets for a legit story.

Two comments. To the "loud pipes save lives" bikers; if that is truly the reason for them then point them out the FRONT, that is where all the hazards are! For the "my can saves five pounds,or ten or however many"; gasoline weighs about seven pounds per gallon, most sleds hold ten or more. That means that between full and empty, say eight gallons, the weight of your sled changes by FIFTY SIX pounds. How many of us can feel that difference? I say none, so you certainly can not feel any difference from your lighter NOISIER can.

With your logic, you could say a Yamaha 4 stroke feels the same as my new lightweight Poolaris...which it does not.

I made sure my aftermarket silencer met the noise standards and it does...I can honestly say it is quieter than many stock exhausts.

I wish they would do a better job of enforcing non-OEM pipes (loud). I would support a law that called for the sled(s) to be impounded and a hefty fine.

It seems many (NOT ALL) of the sleds with loud pipes are off trail guys..the same guys who carry backpacks with shovels around northern WI..Like *** do you need a backpack and shovel for in Eagle River?! The same guys who shoot onto the trail in front of people on the railroad bed..

Usually IL people too..lol..because those of us living in WI and MI understand the importance of the trails systems and are not ignorant enough to run a loud pipe/can.

What an ignorant statement regarding the people from Illinois. I live there and spend a ton of time and my heard earned money in the U.P. The last time I checked you are only a stones throw from the border of Illinois. If you are in Northern Wisconsin then I guess I am from Florida. Goof.

Biggest think I've seen from the DNR is they will show up in an area if there are people complaining about something. 5 or 6 years ago dnr sat in a driveway righting tickets for not making complete stops because a sled ran a stop and hit a car going in that drive, so this could be why they are out so much.

Congrats on not having a can on your sled. Spent 6+ years living in the north woods and still have family up there and it seems like every sled group from IL has cans on their sleds..

That means that between full and empty, say eight gallons, the weight of your sled changes by fifty six pounds. How many of us can feel that difference? I say none, so you certainly can not feel any difference from your lighter noisier can.

I've seen A LOT of DNR this year and heard they were cracking down on loud exhaust.

This from MI DNR reports Feb 1 - 15th

>>conducted a group snowmobile patrol in Houghton County. A large number of snowmobiles were contacted and a wide range of violations were encountered. Sound emissions enforcement was conducted in a complaint area and seven snowmobiles that were tested were found to be over 88 decibels. All of the snowmobile operators that were issued sound emissions tickets had snowmobiles that tested in a decibel range that is proven to cause permanent hearing damage. Enforcement action was taken.

Taken from the MSA Facebook page today. Don't kill the messenger, just passing on what I read:

"Well snowmobilers it happened, during the Snowmobile Advisory Workgroup meeting yesterday in Sault Ste Marie, we were informed that a section of Trail #2 in the western UP will be closed next year due to excessively loud snowmobiles traveling on the trail. This person has allowed snowmobiles through his private property for 20 years, this section of trail is close to his residence. His words to the DNR were “you can continue through March 31, but were tired of the noise” he noted that there were very few loud sleds in the past but this year has been constant at all hours and he is done. So stay tuned, the Grant Sponsor and the DNR are not sure that a reroute will be possible due to the rough terrain. Trail #2 is the main East/West corridor in the western UP."
