What are people thinking??

I was in town yesterday for a funeral....and it was raining, and 42 degrees...I counted at least 20 sleds, coming into and out of town to get gas (over a 3 hour period)....I was floored...they had to have been running on mud and gravel......what ticks me off is...what little base was out there is gone now...all because of a few knuckleheads...I hate to tell people not to ride when we have a winter like this...the businesses up here have had a hard enough time....but man did that chap my *** yesterday. Because you "GOTTA RIDE"...you may have ruined what little base we had, for the rest of the winter.

I don't know...maybe I am just old and crabby....lol....What do you guys think?? Am I outta line for ranting about this??

If riders spent the money to be up north they are going to ride if they can. They will find the bar stool soon enough in their opinion. Just the way it works when here and weather warms up. You and I live here so our approach is completely different & we will wait it out. It is what it is.

Not going to comment on the "old and crabby" , but;

for those of us don't live where we can ride locally (lucky you) but that come from out of town, it may be one of two or three weekends the entire year that we are able to go. Sometimes we get out at the far end of a loop for the day as conditions are deteriorating and have no choice but to hit some mud and gravel to get back. Do we usually like it, no, but it has to be done.

Sometimes, late season conditions you go out knowing you are going to encounter some crap, but ride through it to get to the remaining good stuff. Couple years ago we went the last weekend of the year, and road trails were pure gravel, but woods were 98% awesome. Ride a half mile of gravel to get to 30 miles of awesome, and repeat that all day, that is a trade I will make anytime. Carbides are replaceable, missing a weekend cannot be replaced.

It wasn't just a few...but yes...with the thin conditions we have had this year...it could....and like you said...this might be it anyway...just a bust of a year

I get that Grant...but if you are gonna ride in the rain...why not trailer an hour further (where there is twice is much snow)....instead of riding on a 2 inch base...I mean this has been in the forecast for a week..plenty of time to cancel rooms and go elsewhere. (where there is more snow)

If I have reservations at a particular place or have a cabin, the trails are still OPEN and I want to ride in 42 and rain, then I'll ride.

If the trails are closed then I don't ride.

Frankly people dont care...look at the other threads... off trail riding, riding on the wrong side of the trail, riding with no snow...people just don't care. They feel they are entitled to do whatever they want... whenever they want to do it.

They are spending their money here and I wouldn't be here without them or so they tell me....Guess I should thank them for not caring.

Never mind saving the trail base. My peeve is when the trails get bare and people start riding where they know they're not supposed to be. Like taking shortcuts across fields, along roads or cutting through people's front yards etc in an attempt to stay in the snow. Trails haven't opened down here yet this winter, but the farmers learned years ago to spread their manure where they don't want people riding before a thaw.

We set our date 3 months out. We have to plan around 4 people's schedules and everybody has things going on. So when the week comes we go. Unless there is unridable snow to begin with. Then we cancel. We have been caught in rain before and it sucks. Like Grant we will however ride 10 miles of crap and wear out some carbides to get to some nice snow. Our window is small. It is that week or nothing. As far as a different location we have been going to the same place for a long time and know a lot of people there. Part of the trip is visiting. So changing location and chasing snow doesn't work either. So those are a few reasons. If the trails are wrecked it has a lot more to do with Mother Nature than sleds. Put the blame where it belongs.

you're barking up the wrong tree here,,,

attakman you and a few others here have the luxury of opening your garage and riding 7 days a week if you like. others who commit to family obligations, work, and etc.. that commit to a weekend that they may only get a chance to do a couple times a year are gonna go and ride regardless. i would of. when you trailer to ride up north its also not as much about riding as it is about just getting "away" from the rat race for a weekend in the north woods.
our trails didn't open down here so if someone trailers from trails that never opened and has a weekend committed unless it turns to 80 degrees they're gonna ride.

what are they supposed to do not ride so you guys who live up there can ride on monday when its gets colder??

it's a complete different mind frame when you can ride any day anytime vs maybe two weekends a year.

also the people that are riding on said conditions aren't the ones ruining the base, its the 45 degrees and thin base ruining the base.

I've been up for a week and put my sleds on the trailer when it started to rain Thursday evening. I was lucky enough to get in around 1000 miles in 6 days. Excellent trail conditions everywhere we went. I saw several groups unloading sleds in Lando as I drove by with my wipers on fri. To each their own.

That's all fine guys....but if I want to ride, and can not change plans....(want to stay where my reservations are, and because I like the people etc)...I'm still trailering further north to ride....what's an hour?? You already trailered this far....why not go where there are better conditions...you can still come back to your "base" and enjoy the people you came to see, and get good riding in...that's my thinking....and I have done that in the past.....I didn't always live up here...and yes while it's nice to be able to pull outta my garage and roll....that doesn't always happen...ya gotta work, and spend time with the wife, and kids sometimes (and she's an anti snowmobiler...lol)

Exactly. Trails open ok to ride, no room for argument. You can always trailer north if your base is gone. Just kidding. Horrible winter. Think snow.

I actually have trailered more than I wanted to the last couple of years, and I live where there is supposed to be snow....how sad is that?? ...mother nature has sucked lately..the season either starts late...we don't have the snow, or it's 50 below zero and miserable to ride (the older I get the less I like below zero riding), or she takes it away early (last winter)...oh well..i guess just less miles on my sled..means it will last longer..lol

Clubs need to close the trails sooner if this is gonna be prevented....but as mentioned, people travel many miles to ride, so they're gonna ride. Our club does a great job when it comes to low snow conditions, but our entire trail system is on privately owned land, therefore the landowner comes first. When it's winding down to what could be the last ride of the season, we'll leave em open til things are beyond hope so people can ride.

We brapped a million gallons a slush off the trails today. You are welcome, whiners!...LOL...glad we decided to ride.The warm temps made our 200 miles real comfy!

How much better would the trails be if everyone stayed home?
