What Does The Chaincase Do On A Snowmobile?

This seems like such a simple question but I could not find the answer anywhere. Basically, I'm wondering what controls the chaincase, and then what the chaincase controls.
Thanks!

if you understand the mechanics of a auto ? your clutches are the transmition & your gearcase is your rear end .

the motor turns tour drive clutch/ the drive clutch turns the driven clutch/ the driven clutch turns the jackshaft and that runs accross the sled to turn the top gear in your chain case the top gear runs the lower large gear in the chain case /the lower gear in the chain case is attched to the driver under the sled that turns the track.
now if u want to know how a 07/08 dimond drive works that is a novel

The chaincase also serves to provide a way to alter the overall gear ratio, much like the gearset in the rear axle or final drive ratio in a car or truck. You can install a smaller drive gear or larger driven gear for a shorter gear ratio - think faster 0-60 time but less top speed. Or go the other way with a larger drive gear and a smaller driven gear for a taller gear ratio - slower acceleration but higher top speed and perhaps better MPG's...

Fredster, I've been looking into that a lot because of a sled I recently bought. I owned a Polaris XC 500..it was an okay sled. Then I bought a 1998 Ski-Doo MXZ 500 and everything about this sled is just phenomenal, but the very first thing I notice (as well as anyone who rides it) is how extremely quick it is at low speeds and how fast it accelerates..so during the summer I'm going to figure out the gear ratio to try to figure out if that's what it is. When I got done riding it, I looked at the enginge to make sure I wasn't riding a 670 haha (that's how much faster it was). The guy who owned this before me clearly knew what he was doing :)

The gear case on my Polaris's also house the reverse gearing and has an adjuster to tighten the drive chain when necessary. A service tip: Turn off the fuel, tip your sled on its side, pull several bolts, remove oil with a turkey baster, adjust chain while open, fill with tranny fluid, bolt the cover back on and you're good to go. 15 minutes of work and you're good for another 2000 miles.

but the 07 08 are a bear and I could not type what to do with out doing it at the same time but look at some picks and U will get it.
or call BDX send him your box of parts get all new bearings pressed on new seals and he will not gouge U and turn aroud fast
