I was slightly surprised to see MN ahead of MI and WI. I think WI and MN have roughly the same population, but I think MI is about double the population.

From some of the accounts I have read, it sounds like almost all of them were in the U.P. at the same time this winter.

Minnesota might have had a little jump on the other states early-on and that could be preserving the lead. Not sure if these numbers reflect current registrations (i.e. currently licensed) or just registered. In MN, unless you take the time to tell the DNR a sled has been destroyed, it's still registered. This means that my 72 Colt, which is long gone, might still be counted - I never sent in the card.

Back when we all had winter, I think MN, MI, and WI had a pretty decent amount of ride-able territory within a reasonable distance of the larger populated areas, so I don't think that would account for a difference.

Maybe the fact that MN still claims home (sort of) to two of the remaining manufacturers figures in somehow.

Michigan USED to be double the population and jobs were plentiful....now we are suffering with very high unemployment (you don't really believe the hype of how low the uneployment numbers are do you??) and folks in Michigan are just struggling to hang on to their homes....so they are not worried about spending on sled registrations...those sleds were sold a long time ago. Sadly most would own a sled if they could but that isn't possible when you measure the need of where the funds HAVE to go, comparied to where most would WANT to spend the $$$....fun stuff. Michigan was the ONLY state to continue to lose pop...in 2011....

Michigan is tied to industry way too much, and needs to diversify but has not do so as of yet. Does that leave Michigan vulnerable for yet another round of population loss....what do you think?

No I think MN wins that also every one has a boat think about all the 12 to 18 ft alloy fishing boats in this state if you have a cruiser you still have the fishing boat we are the land of 10000 lakes. The top 10 boating states ranked by number of registered boats (based on 2008 NMMA data) were Florida, Minnesota, California, Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, New York, South Carolina, Ohio and Illinois in that order

Thought I would throw out some numbers from MI.gov

Snowmobile Registration for fiscal year 2010=2011

Snowmobile Registrations……………… 83,522

Seems a little low, perhaps trail stickers bought.

MI is a 3 year registration. But numbers can get easily skewed. As mentioned a sold sled can get lost for a couple of years.
And MI loves to double dip on any overlapping years already paid for on a reg.
I sold a sled last Fall 2011 registered thru 2013. I did pull the sticker off ??

As a person who spent a fair amount of his career in the market research industry, its clear there are three principle drivers of the high number of snowmobiles in Minnesota:
1) It is butt cold there
2) There is snow up to your butt there
3) Given a choice between watching the Vikings or going snowmobiling anyone would choose snowmobiling!

Now THIS is funny! (and just maybe has an element of truth)

Those MN sledders head to the UP for sure to sled. I see MN plates all over here in the winter time. The next road over is the guy from MN that does the snowballcancer.org thing. The MN border is less than 2 hours away from the UP Wi border.

I wonder how many of those Michigan registrations are from non-residents? It's been estimated that as many as 8,000 hoosiers register in Michigan. I'll bet at least that many from Ohio and other neighboring states do it too.

I see they have ND ranked last in the group, that is fine with me. We very seldom meet anyone on our trails when there is snow.
