Whitefish Bay. Riding over open water? Legal yes or no?

Last weekend my brother and I rode from Paradise on the ice along the shore of Whitefish Bay heading south then east past Tahquamenon Bay towards Brimley about 10 miles past the Tahquamenon river mouth. Lots of snowmachine tracks like a highway. At the time about a mile ahead of us there were 4 machines and they were pulling away from us as we wanted to see how far we could go. Well to make a long story short there was open water about 30 feet wide from a small river or stream. Those 4 rode accross the open water like it was no big deal with a number of other tracks showing that a dozen or so machines have skiped accross this open water. We decided to not and turned around. I think my brother was a little scared lol.

Anyhow is it legal in Michigan to cross open water on a lake or river?

Thanks Pro

Looks to me like if they wanted to, they could give you a careless operation ticket. I can't find a specific Michigan law stating that you can't cross open water.

Does anyone know if there is a specific law against it? Or just the careless operation thing?

famous guy, i think they can nail you for it if theres another way around the water. i know here in ill they have gotton people for carless in the winter and no boat stickers in summer. im sure they can find a reason to ticket you if they want pretty much anywhere

True, I think they can ticket you for anything they want under the "Careless Operations".

I was just curious if it was anywhere in writing that you cannot use a snowmobile specifically on open water.

I know the spot NOPRO is talking about, and there is no other way around it.

well i geuss if thers no other way around it then it would be legal caus i dont think dnr will go over it...that is unless theyre on the other side. then i would be hesitant about it and be ready to plead your case.

well in MN it is only legal if you have a life vest in reach a fire extinguisher and a whistle or Horne and you don't break the speed limit
