I have been out of work since Feb.15 and I gotta say it SUCKS! been a plumber for twenty years and never been thru this before! I knew it was coming last october, just did'nt know exactly when. Well here I am 8 mo. later and have burned thru my entire savings. Sledding this year? haha! it will probably be rides far and few between. It will probabaly be more around home than making trips to the great white nort eh! It has started to become depressing to me but not to the point where clinical attention is needed! the side jobs have even almost come to a halt and I used to consider myself the side job king. Side jobs is what pays for my extra curricular activities called snowmobiling and swilling beer. These times we live in are tough and I wish I could see the light at the end! If someone else can, shine it my way. To all of us out of work, good luck and God bless! Keep your chin up, this is not forever! nothing is forever.

2000, you must of worked for someone else it sounds. How is your boss doing? Owners of the companies do not get "side jobs". all jobs are for the Company in some form. Side jobs are the jobs your employees do at night to take jobs away from the Company they work for. Then they wonder why they have no regular job anymore. Times are tough and most need to reinvent themselves. Getting out of a comfort zone is very tough. After all we all have (think we have) a status zone we must retain. Bad times are humbling for all.

polaris- you are right I do work for someone else. That someone else has been plumbing my fathers' houses for forty years. My father is a general contractor here where I live. My employer let's the employees do side jobs because we usually have such a high volume of work, he doesn't care. I see you are a tile guy. Well, I have a state recognized plumbing license and that alone allows me to do side jobs. You of all people should know that when you work in the trades a good number of years, you build a reputation and get to know alot of people and thats where the side jobs come into play! Listen, I would be more concerned about the shithead down the street with a toolbox that calls himself a plumber when really he is just a handiman with no formal education or training. I went to school for five years to obtain my plumbing license. I by no means feel bad about doing side jobs because its work my employer probably would not have gotten anyway. My father was on the Fire department here for fourteen years before he started building houses full time. His days off from the department he built houses. Was he taking work away from the other builders? No! He was feeding his family. Side jobs have been in existense long before I was in the picture my friend. Have a great season sledding and THINK SNOW!

dolph, nice to here your wife has a job. Mine works for me, barely part time in the office. 2000 I am also a Licensed Residentual Builder in the state of Michigan. I will never stop doing tile to go after my customers (builders) work. Those "side jobs" would be stealing from the people that hire me. Same as the guys who work fro me would be considered stealing if they bid against me. I supply them with the tools, sometimes vehicles, insurance and a somewhat stable enviroment to work. They have no overhead such as showroom, warehouse, insurance, office staff. They get to work off my license. They get that on my ticket, so if they are bidding jobs in the same field of course they can be less. I explained to them that it does them no good to do this. They make the same either way and then they got to collect the money, deal with the customer and warrenty there work with the "side job". Do they really want the head aches? once this side job thing starts they loose respect for your company and eventually go after your accounts. I have lost million dollar accounts this way. Just giving an Owners view here. The other side of the fence were the grass is not so green.

Polaris- I understand what ur sayin! really I do. I do watch who asks me to do their work and I do not take work from my employer with his customers! He at times, when things are good, has given me work to do on the side because our shop was to busy to do the work. I guess he would rather give it to us guy's rather than tell the customer to go to another shop. Bottom line is, chances are your guy's do side jobs without your knowledge. Chances are they are not takin work away from you either.

Everybody does side jobs & if the boss gets pissed they say I'll never do that again...until next time. You have to exspect a guy to do side jobs usually too small to worry about & good extra money for him. If you want guys to drop side jobs work them overtime 24-7 & they won't have time for side jobs.

If you pay them well they won't need to work side jobs. They can spend time with their families. Right now any job in MI is a good job. 15% unemployment. If you want your grout stained another color or cleaned, we are on it. I am doing work that I laughed at 2 yrs. ago. Humbling to say the least. I hope everyone on JD the best!

Ran out of work and laid off 2 1/2 months ago...Sucks and right before the holidays..lame. I guess its all how you look at it, i have friends that have been off since last fall......... All this talk about side jobs, its no big deal. The Union B.A. and President both have been through this in the early 80's and early 90's and they know you have to do any work you can to survive in the trades. Now if you are running a larger job and not committed to the Union as a contractor they may say they can let you go. I am pretty sure that the Union people spend little or NO time looking for side jobbers they have bigger concerns like having your card and being up to date with your dues. I'am sure there has been an exception here and there.

well luck has it, a friend of mine knows a guy looking for some help, so i called him and start monday morning re-siding three townhomes, there pretty big i guess and he thinks he can keep me busy for at least 3 months, so after almost 2 years of little to no work i am back in the force, the good thing is my sled should get used more now than i thought as of last week, good luck to all that are out of work, it really sucks, but one thing for sure is i spent almost 2 years with my 6 and 8 year old kids instead of putting them in daycare, i'll cherish those moments for ever.

We had major layoffs two weeks ago. 37 people out of three hundred. First time in 37 years. Ironically alot of the dead weight managers got to stay. I'm hoping that this is it for a long time. People that were let go, got a pretty good package though. Then I read in the paper today about all the illegals in our county, and there is basically nothing local authorities can do unless the feds ask them to. I didn't know that illegals can be in any school and have the same rights has legals. Same with hospitals. I don't have the answers but it doesn't seem right. I'm for a better life for everyone ,but can it be done legally? Anyway good luck to those out of jobs right now. God please bless America!!
