Just a guess here but the guys that play music, I gather are younger guys into the HI tech world we live in
and those who prefer the Sound of the sled itself, are the older crowd??
I fall into the older crowd

I just enjoy the sound of my sled
all I need
same deal on street bikes and atv's too
NO need for tunes on my toys
NOW In my truck, there I prefer to hear tunes and Drown out the sounds of my truck LOL

Everyone has their own idea about how they like to ride which I think is great. Maybe the fact that I am a musician and listen to music while on my lawn tractor cutting grass, cruising across a lake in the boat, working in the garage or riding a sled. By no means am I a member of the younger crowd in fact been listening to jams on a sled with a Walkman cassette long before CDs, I-Pods or Bluetooth were even words.

Always listen to I-pod. Old enough to have had an 8-track player in my first couple of cars.
I'm able to unplug the speakers in my helmet when we stop as easy as someone unplugging their heated sheild. So there's no need for hand gestures or having to worry about understanding them.

We have one bud has his tunes on while riding. Ok with me ....I'm becoming more fluent in hand gestures & he is getting better at understanding them. LOL :) I'm sure he finds it relaxing .... Heck going triple digits at times floats my boat more than good tunes so whatever is fine with me.

The sled & snow is the main event for me. I can listen to music some other time. So many people are addicted to their shiny little electronic devices. "Unplug and live your own life in the here & now", that's what Pappy would say if he was still with us. RIP, CJ.

It would be a distraction for me. More important to be alert and ready for the next fool coming around the corner on the wrong side of the trail.

I-pod classic 80 gigabyte memory. I've got Tork X helmet speakers, they fit real well in the ear spaces of my helmet and are held in place with velcro. The cable I have routed under the inner liner of the helmet and the plug hangs down a few inches on the one side. Some of the cables that go from the Ipod to the speaker jack now have volume control built in. Works for me just to unplug when stopping. Back when I got these didn't see cords with volume control, but when I upgrade or need to replace may consider that option.

For me it's actually the opposite. Before tunes I would start to daydream at times and start to zone out a bit when I wasn't in the lead. Good tunes keeps my metabolism up and I'm more alert. Not saying everyone would be the same, but that's how it is for me.

What's old? 40? 50? 60?

I'm 49 and ride with tunes. So does one of my riding buddies. Same age. I actually think we should be considered the "younger guys". :)

unplugging only works if you aren't using sound isolating earphones. it's that type of headphone/earbud that makes it hard to talk.

X2 I feel the same about this. No way is it a distraction to me.

We have a few 50+ year old guys in our group that wear earbuds. The 4 stroke guys. ;) They get aggravated when we try to talk to them, making them reach down to turn their music down. So we just leave them out of the route decision making loop. Which also aggravates them.

wasn't saying being OLD means bad in any ways
I just tend to see more younger folks into all the modern tech stuff, but guess folks of any age can be into the tech stuff

Me, I like music, play in in shop garage, and in home, but I am NOT up to par on modern tech, I have NO idea how to use a smart phone for music, and no plans to learn LOL

I do also see more younger generations than ME< that seem to like to multi task more things
where as I maybe try to just enjoy the ONE thing I am doing more
riding a sled, I try to pick my lines, see around and enjoy the outdoors and use the sled to get away from many things
I try not to take more with me than I need
and music , I can do without and just enjoy the scenery and sounds on my sled
but NOT bashing those that want more

me and my older buddys, all, leave the tech as much as possible behind, and for many of us(like me) I think its far passed us, HAHA!
and our ability to keep up with it, or NO desire to learn it on my side!

A few years ago, I bought Panasonic noise cancelling ear buds. Hooked it up to my cheap walmart mp3 player, now hook it up to my smartphone. They are actual noise cancelling, same tech as the bose noise cancelling headsets. price was $75 on sale. They don't work as well as the over the ear bose, but they cut down noise a tic better than the foam ear plugs. A little cumbersome if I stop and talk to buds for a minute to pick a trail, have to fish around in my sno britches to turn off music. I also have sirius/xm on my smart phone, so I sometimes listen to howard stern, rush limbo or other stuff. Same thing as listening to radio in car, sometimes as in the car I turn off music and listen to the engine...
