Just south of Madison, on I-90 exit#156 Stoughton the overpass is county N. They sit there as well. Have seen the squads lined up on the ramp waiting for the go ahead.

It has nothing to do with Illinois plates. Speaking from experience, it's because of the way many people from Illinois tend to drive

Agree with Harski...I find the extra 15 minutes of drive time a good trade off for less stress when driving. I have a Garmin GPS in my work car (50k miles per year) and you REALLY have to speed for a long time to make much difference on arrival time.

I drive I-39/51 from Stevens Point to Wausau, then Hwy 29 to I-94, to Minnesota every other weekend.

Normally, I will see anywhere from 3-5 troopers parked in any one of MANY different locations, bridges, medians, side roads, On ramps (So you don't see them until you go under the bridge) and even farm field driveways.

They are always changing it up, so they can be as unexpected as possible.

With that said, I pretty much hold my speed right up to 75, and have yet to be stopped. (Knock on wood, now I did it!) I did have a trooper in the median flash his lights at me one time at 75 as I came over a hill, but that's been it.

The rule I've come a custom to is this:

In the words of a trooper, 8 your fine, 9 your mine.

Oh yeah, and your EYES are your best radar detector. Use them.

I have some buddies that are in law enforcement-I've been told if you set the cruise anywhere up to 8 over the limit, you're pretty safe. Obviously all officers are different, and will have different tolerance levels. I set the cruise at about 8 over regardless of which highway I'm on. 26+ years of driving and still have yet to receive a speeding ticket. Probably just jinxed myself, but so far so good. When I see a cop I don't even hit the brake anymore. Obviously road and traffic conditions will have some bearing on whether or not they want to grab you or not. A steady pace with no lane jockeying and my experience tells me they are more worried about those that are using the highway as their personal racetrack.

For some reason our local cops have decided to stop doing that practice. I wonder if it had anything to do with a local officer falling off the bridge last year.....

I try to just stay in the crowd. Had a close call coming back just about Madison. Not worth the $$$. We are heading up Friday & reading this will remind me to keep it down.

slowing down solves all the problems and is cheapest. no detector, no tickets, less wear and tear on the car.....and less stress.

what is really funny is to live here in the Yoop and stay away from any city for at least 6 months...then return!

i can only describe what i saw on my last trip to chicago as lunacy. and it was nearly every driver. zig-zag, race ahead....then 5 min later, i am still next to you! last trip to lower michigan, much the same. run red lights, cutting people off....nuts.

not a single stop light here in Ontonagon County. no great need to hurry either. this works for me

The troopers are highly trained to aim the laser at the il plates...

Couldn't agree more. They are trained to look for flashes of light and color. Kind of like spotting UFO's in the sky. Laser is the only way to keep up with you crazy drivers !!!! Besides, the police only have to travel down the road slowly and look in the ditches for the WI drivers. They will be digging the car out of the snow after dropping a cigarette on their lap and putting it out with a beer. I can throw a MN twist in it. MN troopers hide behind orange barrels (10 months out of the year) and wait for a car to hit the last 12 barrels "behind" the merge sign in a road construction area. Can you say double fine!

I make the trip into Wisconsin from the Twin Cities almost every weekend, and the cruise gets set at 59 in the 55mph zones and 68 mph in the 65 zones. My Minnesota plates seem to attract more attention by the cops than the Wisconsin ones passing me. I figure it is going to be 1.5 to 2 hours regardless of conditions. Oh yeah, ALWAYS slow down on Hwy 53 north of Hwy 8, all the way to Hwy 70 near Spooner. On the weekends, the presence is heavy and out for your traveling money. They especially like the medians around Rice Lake!

This post is friggin hilarious. Can you guys say PARANOID! Lets do this, lets do that, and none of it works! Good luck with your feeble attempts, and slow down.

If we had snow storms all the time we wouldn't need to speed to get anywhere except the backyard. The roads would be nice and slippery.

You won't make it through Rosendale Wis with your thinking. I've had co- workers get nailed for 1-2 mph over. It's big money for the town and the locals know it.

It's all about the money and governmental control. Look at the number for the death rate on the Autobahn w/ no speed limit.

From Wikipedia about Autobahn's.

[edit] Accident evaluation
The overall safety record of German autobahns is generally better than that of other European highways[citation needed]. German autobahn fatality rates are lower than Austria's and higher than Switzerland's rates. Highways are safer than other road types, as documented below.

Rate = Killed per 1 Billion Veh·km [8]
Autobahn Other Roads Total Autobahn Other Roads Total Autobahn
YEAR Fatalities[9] Fatalities Fatalities Death Rate[10] Death Rate Death Rate (% of Road Travel)
1970 945 18,248 19,193 27.0 84.5 76.5 14
1980 804 12,237 13,041 10.0 42.6 35.4 22
1985 669 7,731 8,400 7.1 26.7 21.9 25
1990[11] 936 6,970 7,906 6.9 19.8 16.2 28
1995 978 8,476 9,454 5.5 19.0 15.1 29
2000 907 6,596 7,503 4.5 14.3 11.3 31
2005 662 4,699 5,361 3.0 10.0 7.8 31

A 2005 study by the German Federal Interior Ministry (Bundesministerium des Innern) indicated that Autobahn sections with unrestricted speed have the same accident record as sections with speed limits. The only identifiable source of traffic risks in connection with speeding have been high-powered light trucks that came up within the last 15 years and as they are used by courier services (e.g. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and trucks alike). Over the years they were only capable of speeds comparable to heavy duty trucks, but since manufacturers began to build in significantly more powerful engines they attain speeds of up to 180 km/h. This led to a significant portion of fatal accidents being caused by such vehicles [12] due to the driver overestimating their or the car's abilities to cope with sudden and heavy braking, side-winds, etc.

Sorry table didn't come through. Death rate autobahn 3 per billion Veh-Km vs 10 per billion Veh-Km on other highways. 70% lower death rate.

Time for a road trip.
