Gee dooski, I drive around all night running plates and don't issue a UTT (uniform traffic ticket, before I get asked) to any of them. I guess I didn't get the memo about being obligated to write them when I run plates. I must not have read the manual. I better go back and do another 6 months in the academy for a refresher on daily duties and requirements.

Please inform me as I am clearly uninformed. When you pull someone over and call that in on the radio that you have them on the side of the road you don't feel any obligation to write them a ticket of some kind? I understand that you can run plates on your computer at will but once you actually have them pulled over ?

Not tiring to be a jerk here. I apologize if I came off that way.

dooski, thanks for your explanation. And although I can appreciate your jump to conclusions, judging attitude, my W T F attitude as you put it was just a current, pop-culture way of asking a simple question. I'm sorry if I offended you in anyway. And, thanks too for suggesting what may or may not be "my" best strategy by simply reading one post of mine and never actually meeting me. Maybe you are the one who needs to question his attitude?

Sorry to get pissy. I went too far and I'm sorry.

I cuss like a sailor. Not offended just try to keep it PC here.

I am interested to see what h-sledder has to say on this topic.

Thanks, dooski. I too, am interested in h-sledders take on this.

What you say?

I pulled on to I39 north after work this afternoon, about 3 miles up the road, I had two trucks towing two place trailers blow by me. WTH? I wonder how fast they are going I thought. So I dropped the old Intrepid R/T down a gear and took off after them. 85 mph peeps. Holy crap! LOL. They must have thought the snow was melting up nort or someting?

Wow! I thought "Super Moderators" just wore capes. They get guns and badges too? LMAO

Lots get stopped with no ticket

We stop many more people who receive warnings than receive citations...not even a requirement to issue any paper-just an ol' fashioned talkin' to sometimes!

Well said stormbringer. A good talking gets you further that issueing a UTT many times. Running a person's license, plate, VIN, or anything else is nothing more than an investigative tool, and doesn't obligate an officer to write anything. I promise there are waaaay more written and verbal warnings give out than UTT's. Many people have more than one violation as well and may receive a warning for a moving violation and a UTT for a non-moving violation. Which is a great deal for the driver. Usually a cheeper fine, no license points, and no insurance increases. Officer discression is pretty much the standard with any department. Most don't want an excuse. Honesty, politeness, and respect will get you a long way. That and as Matt said just obey the laws to begin with and don't worry about it.

Once he or she calls in your plates on the radio they are obligated to write you a ticket. By taking off your belt you give them the option of slapping you on the wrist and writing you a seat belt ticket. If you have your belt on they have to write you a speeding ticket. Yes you could get two tickets if barney fife is on the case but in my experience, if they like you, they will only write you a ticket for the belt. They save face and you don't get hit 150 and a black mark on your insurance record.

Judging by your "whut the fock" attitude this may not be the best strategy for you.

Dooski,
Where did you get THAT bit of MISinformation?? It's called Officer Discretion. I know a ton of Officers. They/we each have our own set of parameters where the warnings end and the citations start. A lot also goes into how the driver and the passengers deal with the stop too. You certainly aren't bound to write ANYTHING just for calling in a license plate- even on a traffic stop.
I agree with the posts that say just slow down a little. If you run 5-8 over the limit and aren't outdriving everyone else, weaving in and out, changing lanes every 1/2 mile you should be fine. Except in Rosendale, apparently!!

I was told that by an officer who pulled me over years ago. "Pulled you over, have to write you something" is what I think he said. Maybe this was just his policy??

I guess my take on it was like h sledder said:

"Many people have more than one violation as well and may receive a warning for a moving violation and a UTT for a non-moving violation. Which is a great deal for the driver. Usually a cheeper fine, no license points, and no insurance increases. "

a seat belt ticket would be that second non-moving violation they might be looking for if they want to take pity on you.

Just a theory, perhaps not the best one.

I guess like most things attitude is everything.

Thanks for the insight!

Money talks

I just hand them my license with a $50 clipped to it. Then they go back to the car, come back and say "Drive safe and have a nice day".
