Yes, Amasa trails are awesome, very low traffic. I probably would have looked at the Florence area westward to Hwy. 139.

A few years ago I almost bought a restaurant on North Twin Lake, liked that area also.

I'm just finding out about Florence /Spread Eagle,WI area yes would be a nice place to live but can be short on snow doesn't get LES like Phelps area. Hey everybody Iron River,MI is perfectly safe place to walkabout never had a problem there & get my trucks serviced at Norland Service Center. I'm sure HH had a problem but Iron River MI is Aok & yes lots of vacant buildings but very safe in town & has great snowmobile trails with light traffic.

Over the 6 years I was up in the U.P. I learned there was no love lost between Crystal Falls folks and Iron River folks. Crystal Falls had some class, as well as Caspian but IR was a little different.

Was born and raised in I.R. and take offense to the people ripping on it, may not be the best town in the world but to say there is no class, you have no idea. To split up Caspian and I.R. is kind of funny since they are pretty much the same town. As far as empty buildings have you not been to any other town in the UP, when the mines left so did all the people.

PS. All the people in Crystal Falls suck! ( just kidding don't even know anybody from there )

staple66, sorry if my message was confusing. I was not referencing the residents of Iron River, but the architecture and aesthetics of the cities. Crystal Falls has some beautiful buildings as well as Caspian (Musuem), Iron River is in need of repair.

If your a traveler from MN WI or IL your going to want to stay away from the Keweenaw Peninsula. Bad snow, high crime, and tons of abandoned buildings. I think Hurley is the most snowmobile friendly.

We have had our cottage in Boulder Jct. WI for 23 years and I really like the location and easy access to most northern WI and UP destinations. It is at the bottom edge of the snowbelt so you can always make it up to the UP in low snow years. It is centrally located so one day you can head east to Land o Lakes or Eagle River and the next day Hurley and Saxon Harbor. Plus you can get to the UP trails in 45min. Our early season and late season riding we will head to the Houghton Handcock area of the UP and always have a great time.

I've been to every town in the UP by snowmobile. The worst place in my opinon is Trout Lake and Hulbert areas. There is no way to get there by trail just county roads and if you do take a trail its mostly swamp land. Be careful not to fall in the swamp.

My top 5 would be:

1. Hancock-Ramada
2. White Pine-Konteka
3. Munising-Holiday Inn
4. Newberry-Comfort Inn
5. Paradise-anywhere in town there is good.

Good to know some of these names. Last year we stayed in Calumet when we were saddlebagging, and there didn't seem to be anyone anymore. Almost like a ghost town. Probably should have gone down to the Ramada in Hancock.

Say what???? Trout Lake trail runs right thru Trout Lake. Hulbert??? Ever heard of Shirley's Trail runs right thru there to??? And Paradise in town truly sucks with that Sheriff who lives just to the south of town harrassing snowmobilers non stop. That trail is ditch banging at 10 mph at best into Paradise and thru it, all swamps to the south coming in.. The name is nothing like the town.

Yeah, and they make you eat pasties and strudel, stay on the trail, go to bars that are named after bugs, and make you drink cold beer too. Then to top it off, you can't get an honest weather forecast anywhere up there. Then all they do is argue about what kind of oil to use in your sled........Yep I'm staying away from there........

Did you find out the new name of the Headquarters bar? Ken says IR a better place to meet but he is further west of me makes sense to bring it west a bit depending on the better snow & trails we want to ride. I'm pretty sure I have ridden most of the trails north of IR not all but most. Have not ridden north of Florence that I can remember usually as far East as we ride trail 2 does burn up the gas quickly.
