Yooper Survival Pack

After the news of two guys missing overnight. I though it would be helpful if everyone shared their thoughts on what to pack for survival gear in a backpack or tunnel bag.

Everyone chime in and lets create the Yooper survival pack.

Pot, cuz then you will not forget the matches.

That shouldn't be funny but, it is!

Along with the usual daily stuff, I always have a couple of flares wrapped in Ziploc bags, cell phone, TP, at least three lighters and my Garmin. Doesn't sound like much but, that's what I roll with.

Plus, I'm always on the lookout for lost dash or saddlebags!

Assuming you are in the UP and not somewhere more remote (mountains) compass, matches, parafin fire starter, whistle, space blanket(s), poncho, pocket knife with a saw and blade etc, small first aid kit, para cord, flashlight and batteries, snickers bars, a container to collect / melt snow for water and the knowledge to keep yourself alive, safe and warm. Certainly there are other things that would be nice to have but if you figure you can get out in 1-2 days this should suffice, I think...

In my windshield bag i have a flashlight, zip ties, 2 small bungee cords, leatherman, toboggan, foot warmers.
In my backpack i have phone charger, foot warmers, water, snickers, lighters, flare, electrical tape, jb weld, ink pen, zip ties, cigars, socks, gloves, balaclava, rope, first aid kit, tools, super glue, small container of oil, plastic bread bag, goggles. Inside of the backpack is orange for signaling. In my coat i have lighter, knife, compass, phone, wallet, toe warmers, ibuprofen, kleenex. I also LEGALLY carry a small pistol in my pant pocket, not chambered, and a pocket knife. Think i have an emergency foil type heat blanket also in my coat. Run with a garmin gps and vv mapping for michigan. Think that about covers it for me.

extra socks, extra gloves and plastic bags to put foot into the dry socks in case your boots get wet.

Don't forget TP can also be used as a firestarter, just remember its better to have this stuff and not need it than need it and not have it. Maybe Linda from the Running Bear will chime in after Mike and deer collided last year she has some good idea's

Cash helps a lot in UP not all places take CCs, flashlight helps too at times with a good pair of boots to get you out. Cell phone aok if you have signal & of course toilet paper when nature calls. Leatherman tool & space blankets with some duct tape & tow rope, my new addition this year was a folding shovel for those nasty stucks. Compass always on board with me with jar of fog zero for glasses. Never ever going to carry handgun on trail too much weight & useless.

I got stuck trailside at 11,000 feet riding the Vail Pass trail system. When I called 911 to report my situation their first question was: "are you injured?"; second question: "are you dressed for the weather?"

Point being your first line of survival is your clothing, don't underestimate how important it is. For survival gear I carry most of what has already been listed, and after this situation I upgraded my boots to a pair that are lighter, and better fitting, because I hiked 5 miles and the boots I was wearing were a real liability. My feet stayed warm and dry, but the boots I had on made the hike much worse. I have also added a Goal Zero solar panel, battery pack, and flashlight, all of which can be used to recharge the cell phone and GPS.

I didn't have a pistol on me, but it would have been very comforting, especially when I could hear something moving about in the woods. And for what it's worth, when Vail Mountain Rescue found me at 12:30 am, at least one of the four had a pistol. Those guys are the are the best!!

The made sure I was hydrated. They also fed me smoked almonds, and gummy electrolytes, so those have gone into my kit. After that they dug my sled out, and we all rode down together.

It's also important to know that if you can't get a cell signal, you still may be able to text.

All you need to survive in the U.P. is a jackknife , waterproof matches and a couple of 330 Conibears "traps". If you can't make it on that stay on the trail.. #unstoppable

Might strap that to the hood! With my zipties and rope. Then put backpack inside of it so i dont jave to wear it. Lol. Actually my backpack as loaded only weighs 10.5 lbs total. And my pistol is very light. Ruger lcp. Forget i have it in my pocket sometimes. Reason i carry it....because i can!! "useless"?? Hmm...well i can garauntee not having it would then be useless. Thats my opinion and everyone has theirs.
