Any Interest in having an Avalanche1 Safety Course in Northern Illinois?

Speaking with Mike Duffy @ Avalanche1 there is the possibility he will do an avalanche safety course in Chicago/Northern Illinois this year if there is enough interest.

Please let me know if you are interested, looking to do something this fall. So far I have 3, and Mike says there is someone else in Chicago that would want to go. Looking for additional people to fill out the class. I will try to get dates from Mike

I might be interested in taking a refresher, depending on when and where it ends up being held. You should also post this in the western riding section.

A little more detail from Mike:

We would need 24 people to make a class

Looking for sometime in November, no firm dates yet.

Thanks!

John

I have been exchanging email with Mike regarding the same topic. A few from my riding group are also interested in taking the class. I will just tell them to follow this thread for future information. I would probably also take it again as a refresher if available on the date it is scheduled. I am guessing there would be 3 - 5 of us that would take the class if held in the Chicago area.

Well, Andy if you got room on your couch it would be a great reason to come visit! I can muster up at least smurfrider to come along too!

You know you are always welcome. ****, we have two open bedrooms now plus the den. Let's see what date gets set. I am pretty confident that there will be enough interest in the Chicagoland area for him to get a big enough group together to justify coming.

Sweet! past couple years we have not had enough people at the Novi show to hold the class.

Interest is looking pretty good, I will relay this info to Mike to see if he has a date in mind. Then, hopefully, we can open it up for registration to see if we meet the 24 min. I would think we could get 24 people from around Chicago to do this, there are a lot of guys out here that take at least 1 trip a year out west.

I don't think it should be a problem. Was always surprised he has not done one sooner in the Chicago area. Seems like more and more people are going west. I sent him a link to this thread also.

Avalanche class in Chicago

Thanks for all the interest in a class in the Chicago area. I have a class that may be close to some of you that is already scheduled. It's in Madison, WI on November 18th from 6pm-10pm. It will take place at Engelharts. www.engelhart.com These guys have hosted classes for years and are one of the few (if only) dealers in the area that stock full lines of mountain sleds, clothing and gear (Doo, Cat and Yamaha). They always put on a good show and offer specials to class participants. Also, there has been some interest in a class at the Milwaukee Snowmobile Show on October 15th and 16th. I was planning to attend that show to demonstrate avalanche products and to promote avalanche awareness. I'm looking into having a class at the show on Saturday. Should know soon if a meeting room will be available.
Also trying to arrange a class in Chicago, but my schedule is pretty full for November and December. Trying to juggle some classes to see if it can happen before mid December.
Please let me know on this forum if the Madison class or the Milwaukee Snowmobile class will work for any of you. I could possibly fly into the Milwaukee Snowmobile Show a day early and have a class on October 14th in the evening. Let me know what works for you. Mike Duffy

@snowww1 > Hey Mike, I was at your class last year in Green Bay, WI. (Excellent course BTW for all those contemplating this!) You spoke of a possible "mid-western land practical" for us flat-landers at a ski hill maybe. Any plans on that for the 2010-2011 season? I know I would like a chance to practice more of the skills you taught for rescue in a field skills setting.

On the snow rescue training

I am looking into doing an on the snow rescue class in WI, possibly Lake Geneva. I will gauge interest at the fall classes. I will put you on the list if you would like. It will be a four hour class covering beacons, probing, rescue skills, team work and leadership. Classes went very well in MN and Colorado last year. Interest started dropping off on classes after January, when people realized that most places out west were not getting very good snow. Weather pattern has changed for this winter and it is predicted that the west will do very well with snow. Mike

Good! Maybe with the guys from N. IL this will spark a big enough crew to do this "on the snow rescue class" also.
