Any Interest in having an Avalanche1 Safety Course in Northern Illinois?

I am looking into doing an on the snow rescue class in WI, possibly Lake Geneva. I will gauge interest at the fall classes. I will put you on the list if you would like. It will be a four hour class covering beacons, probing, rescue skills, team work and leadership. Classes went very well in MN and Colorado last year. Interest started dropping off on classes after January, when people realized that most places out west were not getting very good snow. Weather pattern has changed for this winter and it is predicted that the west will do very well with snow. Mike

Hey Mike

I am very interested in this, nothing better than hands on training!

Definitely would like to attend the hands on training class. The classroom was informative but field training would be even better. Wayne, there will always be room at our house. Still a good distance from Madison or Milwaukee though if that is where it ends up being held. Hoping northern Illinois works out for Mike. I really do think there is enough interest in this area. Guys from lower Michigan are also more inclined to drive to Illinois than Wisconsin.

Definitely interested in the field training, and probably at least 3 or 4 of my riding buds. Lake Geneva would be a perfect location!

On the snow rescue class

Appears to be a lot of interest in the on the snow rescue class. I will talk to my contact at Lake Geneva and see what date I can line up. The prerequisite for the on the snow rescue class is the four hour classroom session (Avalanche awareness, avoidance and rescue). The on the snow rescue class gives the hands on experience for the classroom session.
Also looks like you really want the class in the Chicago area. Anyone have any suggestions on a location? Would a week night be ok for the class? Thanks for all the interest. Mike Duffy

Mike, I would suggest somewhere in the Schaumburg area or near Ohare airport. Fairly accessable from all parts of the city and the Rockford area.

I agree, I think somewhere around O'Hare would be a great meeting spot as it is pretty central to all major highways and easily accessible for those in the North and the South suburbs. For me a class during the week would be fine in Chicagoland, but Unfortunately a class in Milwaukee during the week won't work for me, i know it is so busy at the snow show, but Saturday-Sunday would be best.

Thanks Mike,

John

Mike, when are you thinking for the on the snow class. Beginning or end of season? Is it just searching + rescue techniques or also touching on snow conditions + digging pits? Is that even possible on man-made snow?

Class will not cover snow stability tests, since the snowpack in the midwest does not apply to western riding. You'll have to come out to Colorado or Wyoming for that (Good excuse for telling the significant other why you need to make another trip west). Looking at doing this class in mid January or early February. When do most of you have your trips planned?
Here's what it covers:
Course content:
• Single and multiple beacon searches.
o Search patterns.
o Walk by test.
o Working as a team.
o Accurate pinpointing.
o Effective shoveling
o Common mistakes in beacon searches.
• Probing
o Finding someone without a beacon
o Effective probing and pinpointing deep burials
• Rescue techniques.
o It not just looking at a beacon.
o Analyzing the avalanche and finding the most likely burial point.
o Coordination and step by step procedures for a fast rescue.
o Leadership and team work.
o Probing and probe lines.
o Mistakes in rescue.
• Rescue scenarios.
o Group timed rescue.
o Find victims with and without beacons.
What to bring:
• Warm clothes and extra gloves. Dress much warmer than you would expect. We have never cancelled a class due to weather.
• Food and water.
• Sunscreen.
• Your avalanche gear: beacon, shovel, probe.
• Good health, please let us know if you have health conditions or concerns. We will be walking/running up and down hills on the rescue scenario and rescue station.
We supply: Beacons, shovels and probes if you do not have them.
Instructor: Mike Duffy. Level I & II Avalanche instructor Colorado Mountain College, rescue/avalanche team leader/avalanche mission coordinator Vail Mountain Rescue Group, instructor Walter Kirch Avalanche Seminars, graduate of National Avalanche School, National Academy of Winter Guiding, AVPRO. Mountain Snowmobiler for 20 years. Member American Avalanche Association.

What the student’s say about the field session:

We practice pretty often & our groups definitely improved greatly on the 3rd & 4th scenario, you'll learn a lot about your crew when you see what they would do if you were dying.

It's worth the time & $$. Caleb Timberlake Backcountryislife

Mike, thanks again for the great class today. Definitely the best $ I have spent in a long time. If anybody is considering this class, don't wait just doo it. 500CID

Great Class Mike! Truely appreciate your knowledge, not to mention got to meet some great people. Thanks again, Lance

Mike's classroom is very good, but everyone should also go to his hands on class. I did it last year on Vail Pass and it was a real eye opener as to how a beacon really works and what is really required to find someone. Very good class and highly recommended. Cannonman, WI (Mark Stewart)

Class follows the guidelines of the American Avalanche Association

I'm working on a class at the Milwaukee Snow Show for Saturday October 16th in the afternoon. Hoping to hear back from them this week to see if I can get a meeting room at the show. Mike Duffy

So if you hold a class at the Milwaukee show on the 16th are you still going to have one in Chicagoland on the 14th, or are you trying to hold one in Milwaukee in lieu of Chicago? Just clarifying. I could probably make either one seeing the 16th is a Saturday.
