Back in the day, when the GOOD OLE TRIPLES ruled the earth, didnt even need a rope. Just grab the clutch by hand and give it a flick. This used to be one of our groups favorite BAR BETS. One day at the LOG CABIN in Conover, a local guy on a old Scorpion one upped us, he just kicked the clutch with the heel of his boot, off he went.
yes you can start a sled that way but it may be difficult with a rope. A 3 1/2 foot piece of nylon ratchet strap would work better(no metal hooks just a cut piece of strap). You firmly wrap the strap around the outside of the primary clutch(not the smaller shaft). Facing the clutch you would wrap the strap counter clock wise so when you pull the strap the clutch will spin the normal way forward. It will take several times if the sled is cold or dosent run well.
This reminds me of a bad night my group had in the mid 1990's. We were at the Root Cellar having some night caps and were ready to head back to our cabin. We all went out and started reaching for our pull ropes and everyone in the group had had their ropes cut. We found the handles thrown all over the parking lot! I will never forget that, and we sure made good use of those straps then.Who would do such a thing anyway?
This just shows who reads their owners manuals.
I had to start my sled with the emergency rope all last weekend. The ski-doo tool kits comes with a white plastic clip that goes into one of the holes in the primary clutch. A strap would also work but you will need to wrap it tightly and overlap so it doesnt slip. Make sure you wrap it around the clutch correct direction so your not spinning the motor backwards. Never wrap the rope around your hand when your pulling it over and have a buddy ready to hit the kill switch if something goes wrong.
