You do not have to be wide open to stay on top of the water on my 02 600xc so long as i keep my speedo reading 30 mph which is about half throttle i can stay going. Overall i would estimate mileage on water to for my sled to be somewhere around 6 mpg but do not know for sure.

Joe, your not a downer. I've seen many like this all the time. It only takes 30 days to be validated in the Guiness Book of World Records. They apparently didn't have enough evidence. That's not the main reason why i'm doing this anyway. It's all for charity!

I have apparently missed something in this thread, what is the charity?-Mezz

Good luck and thanks for your service. My future son in law just came home in Dec. and also in the marines. Very proud. Its very cool that you are raising money for the fire dept.

Erick, I would assume that you have an approved & mapped area that will be permissible for you to do this. -Mezz

Mezz,

He should not have to have any aproved route. All that he has to do is follow the rules of a pwc and he can run the waterway. Joe

It seems that Eric has run into some hurdles with the Coast Guard. John do have any connections with the local Coast Guard? Anybody have any ideas to help him get through all the red tape in time?

From that Facebook link, I read where he already was cleared by the local CG, but the higher ups at Duluth have a problem. I wonder if the rules would be different on a land-locked inland lake like Rice Lake. It is certainly big enough and would be much easier to fish a sled out of.

It's about the fact that there will be polution when the sled goes down. That's why the boat open water sled racing fad died out so quickly. Loved going to them in the early 80's. I bet the sled will need to get an MC number and a vessel safety check also.
A friend of mine bought a fair ride with the little boats that go round and round. Then bought some totalled out jet skis and combined them into 600cc little wooden boats, way cool and fast. He had to add bilge pumps, horn, nav.lights, fire ext., life vests, etc. To these little boats to get to run them in the river, let alone a great lake.

My suggestion would be to contact the Moyles whom use to run in the watercross circuit. They had to have permits from the DNR at the time to do their practice laps on Torch Lake. They also had to have a retrieval craft to hoist out the sunken sled which was a modified pontoon boat. They could probably give some assistance on who specifically to contact etc...-Mezz
