This season has to be better than last season.

Had some deep conversations (alcohol involved) over the weekend about the upcoming riding season. The general consensus was nothing can be worse than last season. Down by me we didn't open trails at all. What are people's thoughts about this season, pessimistic or optimistic?

Wait & see is my approach & ride ASAP after snowfall. Always LES in my area & system snow too so there will be riding never been shut out in 9 years. Short seasons sure... thaws sure.... rain too but always rideable conditions on & off trail. Never seen Vilas,WI or WUPMI shut out might have happened but I don't recall shutouts in last 30 years. Always riedable snow somewhere in Midwest between MN,WI UPMI.

You can measure the Acorns, Count the Wooly Bears, check the size of the Indian's Wood Pile but it's really up to Mother Nature. She'll snow when she's darn good and ready. Heck, I drove 400 miles last winter to ride only 250 miles on the sled. That's about as bad as it gets. Think Snow!!

The dry summer and fall (so far) certainly seem to be a cause for concern but it’s hard to believe that the snow situation could be as bad or, perish the thought, worse than last year. Bad snow years are not that uncommon in my area but when there’s no riding in northern MN, that’s a bad winter. Because of last year, I think I have somewhat lower expectations for this year. This being said, I think I’m also a little more willing to accept the fact that increased travel and/or flexibility may be necessary to score some good riding. Having a collection of low mileage sleds is not all that satisfying.

I think God is saving all the moisture for the winter months. I think He has an epic winter in store for us.:)

Plan for the worst and hope for the best! What else can you do? Just have to wait and see when the snow starts and where it goes, but most importantly where it STAYS. Still had some decent riding on trips last season, but timing was everything for those trips. I would have to say I don't think this season could be any worse than last. The warm temps last year did it in. Raining when it should be snowing!

winter of 2013

I can't wait till the snow storms like the one the last week of February. The deep powder was the most fun ever. Wet heavy and deep. Breaking trail, powder over the hood. The bigger the bumps the faster I want to go. Dec 1 trail 13 out of Pat's to Twinn lakes will be broken in..

WE RIDE!!!!!!!!!!

That 20+inch dump was epic but I had a tuff time with all that powder with my Attak. Venturenorth called me cancelled our ride that day said too much snow & like a big fool I went out alone. Big mistake 1-2 miles & I was soaked constant stream of powder over the hood struggled to turn around big stuck never made it out our road. lol Much better day 2 trails had some pack but only 1 sled at a time could get could thru the deep & groomers never did catch up in Vilas that weekend so a lot of unhappy riders with big bump conditions. I had a great time overall but too bad we didn't have that storm early Feb so we could have had more use of soooooooo much snow. :)

I'd hate to think it could be any worse than last year (especially around here), but we all know how cruel mother nature can be.

Too much snow???

Hummm....if you have a sled that can't go in the deep, time to think about dumping it and getting one that will. Personally this is when sledding is absolutely the best. Ride anywhere, don't have to worry about a groomer....oh, yeah!

When the day comes that we get too much snow to ride, is the day I will find a better sled for the conditions, or give it up altogether.

Driving a sled that is made for real snow is pure sledding.

HOPEFULLY we get snow in moderation IN NWWI, not like last season when we got dumped with alot of heavy wet stuff at once the groomers couldn't work with. Then we had to hear everyone bitch cause it wasn't groomed overnight. Last year sucked for us, Hopefully it is better this winter, hate to live with a groomer Hubby that has to deal with it. GODSPEED fast!

Totally agree those were impossible trail conditions with limited time to groom out. Huge snow =huge bumps or no groom. I feel for your groomer hubby as was no win for groomers too much snow all at once followed by very heavy traffic. I gave area condtion reports saying trails had limited groom & this was not a typical snow then groom Aok all is normal riding. In that condition you will have a groom that will tear up easily & nothing any groomer can do about it as traffic moves thru. Got to take the good with the bad & groomer whining my be informative but complaining was useless.IMO :)

Yep, you got that right. I also did the trail report for Iron River on Snowtracks, was really "hairy" when certain businesses complained to me that I didn't make a "true" report. But what do they know sitting in their cushy offices looking out the window. Hopefully this year will be easier to make a report as I usually go out and ride after the groomers go out. There has been times in the past I had to change my report throughout the day. But love doing this as I refuse to lie about it just to get people up here and piss them off when they find out condition weren't that good.
